Every horse deserves the chance to begin again. 💙
When Emmaline arrived at Begin Again Horse Rescue Inc. in Lima, New York, the 5-year-old pony mare could barely walk more than a few steps.
She had spent her young life without the veterinary, dental, farrier, or daily care she needed to grow and thrive as a horse. Her hooves were severely overgrown and misshapen, her legs were distorted, and her body carried the effects of long-term neglect.
immediately stepped in to give Emmaline the care she had been denied. After X-rays and a full veterinary evaluation, her farrier began corrective trimming, while a massage therapist worked gently to help relieve her knotted muscles, twisted ligaments, and strained tendons.
Progress came slowly — but it came.
It took a month before Emmaline would stand to eat her grain and hay. Another month later, this sweet little mare began to show a spark of joy, even hiking up her hind end with a bit of playful s***k.
While Emmaline may never be completely normal physically, her personality has blossomed. Today, she runs and plays with her 2-year-old miniature horse companion, bucking, galloping, tossing her mane, and discovering what it means to simply be a horse.
The EQUUS Foundation is proud to spotlight the lifesaving work of our Equine Welfare Network organizations, like Begin Again Horse Rescue, who give horses like Emmaline the time, care, and compassion they need to heal — and the chance to begin again.
