The future of equine welfare depends on the next generation. 💙💚⁣

In 2026, the EQUUS Foundation will award a minimum of $60,000 in scholarships to junior, senior, and graduate-level students pursuing equine studies at institutions within the EQUUS Foundation’s Equine Education Network.⁣

Scholarships will range from $1,000 to $2,500, with at least one reserved for a current IHSA member. ⁣

𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗴𝗿𝗮𝗺 𝗦𝗽𝗼𝘁𝗹𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁: The Rider's Closet 👢💙⁣

Equestrian apparel should never stand in the way of a rider’s opportunity to learn, grow, and participate in the sport they love. ⁣

An EQUUS Foundation program, The Rider’s Closet helps make riding more accessible by providing show and schooling apparel to scholastic riding programs, pony clubs, therapeutic and veterans programs, equine charities, equestrian camps, and individual riders in need across the United States.⁣

📬 All requests are fulfilled by mail at no cost to the recipient, helping reduce the financial barriers that can come with participating in equestrian activities.⁣

All of the new and gently used items provided through The Rider’s Closet have been generously donated by the riding community, which includes both individual and retail donors. ⁣

Hay may seem like the simplest part of a horse’s daily care, but forage is the foundation of equine health, comfort, and welfare. From supporting gut health and reducing ulcer risk to helping maintain healthy airways, the way we select, store, and feed hay matters. 🌾

Recent research shared by The Horse Portal explores how choices like feeding hay dry, soaked, or steamed can impact nutrients, dust levels, palatability, and overall horse health. The biggest takeaway? There is no one-size-fits-all answer. The best approach depends on the individual horse, their health needs, and the quality of the hay itself.

At the EQUUS Foundation, we believe horse welfare starts with knowledge. Every informed decision — from forage analysis to safe storage to thoughtful feeding practices — helps safeguard the comfort and dignity of horses throughout their lives.

Because being a horse protector starts with understanding what horses need to thrive. 💙

Every horse deserves the chance to begin again. 💙

When Emmaline arrived at Begin Again Horse Rescue Inc. in Lima, New York, the 5-year-old pony mare could barely walk more than a few steps.

She had spent her young life without the veterinary, dental, farrier, or daily care she needed to grow and thrive as a horse. Her hooves were severely overgrown and misshapen, her legs were distorted, and her body carried the effects of long-term neglect.

immediately stepped in to give Emmaline the care she had been denied. After X-rays and a full veterinary evaluation, her farrier began corrective trimming, while a massage therapist worked gently to help relieve her knotted muscles, twisted ligaments, and strained tendons.

Progress came slowly — but it came.

It took a month before Emmaline would stand to eat her grain and hay. Another month later, this sweet little mare began to show a spark of joy, even hiking up her hind end with a bit of playful s***k.

While Emmaline may never be completely normal physically, her personality has blossomed. Today, she runs and plays with her 2-year-old miniature horse companion, bucking, galloping, tossing her mane, and discovering what it means to simply be a horse.

The EQUUS Foundation is proud to spotlight the lifesaving work of our Equine Welfare Network organizations, like Begin Again Horse Rescue, who give horses like Emmaline the time, care, and compassion they need to heal — and the chance to begin again.

A horse’s future should be planned with the same care as every other stage of their life.⁣

For many horses, the ideal next step is staying with the people who know them best, with adjusted work, added support, or a thoughtful retirement plan. ⁣

But when circumstances change and a transition becomes necessary, that decision should never be rushed or left to chance.⁣

Through our Safe Landings program, EQUUS Foundation helps connect horse owners with vetted organizations and programs that may be able to provide safe, appropriate opportunities for horses in need of a new chapter.⁣

Planning ahead, asking the right questions, and choosing carefully can help protect horses from uncertain outcomes, including neglect, abuse, or the risk of slaughter. 🐴💙⁣

A horse is 𝗺𝗼𝗿𝗲 than a ride. 𝗠𝗼𝗿𝗲 than a ribbon. 𝗠𝗼𝗿𝗲 than what they can do for us.⁣

A horse is a life 𝘸𝘰𝘳𝘵𝘩 protecting.⁣

They carry our dreams, teach us patience, offer comfort, and remind us of the power of trust. In return, they deserve safety, dignity, and a future free from abuse, neglect, and unnecessary suffering.⁣

Together, we can stand up for America’s horses and help ensure they are valued not only for what they give, but for who they are.⁣

A lifetime of love deserves a safe place to land 💙⁣

When Freedom Hill Horse Rescue, Inc. in Dunkirk, Maryland was contacted by a family grieving the loss of their matriarch, they were also facing a difficult question: what would happen to her beloved gelding, who had lived on the same farm his entire life and was about to turn 30? ⁣

Freedom Hill opened their gates — and their hearts.⁣

Within just one week, this senior horse settled into his new home. Surrounded by gentle care, grooming sessions, massages, and the kindness of volunteers and visitors, he began to thrive. He has even bonded with two rescue mares, creating what Freedom Hill lovingly calls his own little herd. 🥹 ⁣

He may be in his later years, but thanks to Freedom Hill Horse Rescue, he will spend them surrounded by safety, companionship, and love. ⁣

The EQUUS Foundation is proud to spotlight the lifesaving work of our Equine Welfare Network organizations, who ensure that horses like him are given dignity, comfort, and care when they need it most.⁣
