Southport Village is one of the most picturesque, historic

coastal villages in the United States of America, enjoying an idyllic Harbor location with commanding views over Sasco Hill, the Country Club of Fairfield and Long Island Sound. Immediate access to Interstate 95 and Southport Train Station provides a swift 50-mile commute to New York City. Located in the southwest section of Fairfield, Southport maintains an independent Post Office, Metro North Train Station and Volunteer Fire Department. Southport also expands to the north of the Village across the Post Road, up through the former farm lands of Mill Hill and west to the Town of Westport border. In this more suburban and country area, lovely houses, new and old, are sited on lots of up to two acres as well as equestrian properties and scattered estates with far larger parcels. In the aftermath of the Great Swamp Fight of 1637 led by Roger Ludlowe, the Deputy Governor of Connecticut, Southport began to thrive as a bustling Seaport. Industrious farmers began to produce bountiful onion crops and Southport earned the title, “Onion Capital of the World”. To this day, throughout the Village in springtime, sprouts of pungent onion grass are a reminder of the deeply rooted legacy of the early farmers’ toil and determination. Today, Southport Village is a genteel, yet lively and energetic community offering the amenities of Pequot Library, public sailing programs at the private Pequot Yacht Club, dinghy docks, boat launching and sailing classes at Ye Yacht Yard and extensive sporting facilities for youth at the Wakeman Boys and Girls Club. Southport is home to specialty shopping, art galleries, antique stores, and dining choices ranging from elegant to bistro to hometown diners. Exquisitely diverse, period architecture dominates the Village landscape. Fine examples of Adam style, Greek Revival, Italianate, Second Empire, Queen Anne, Gothic Revival, Shingle style and Colonial Revival abound while three magnificent Captain’s houses stand guard across from Southport Green. Two former tenement houses have been transformed into posh condominium buildings and two old onion warehouses are home to the Pequot Yacht Club.
