We never thought we’d be this excited to take home second place! 🥈👏

Back in January, we attended the Groundbreaking Ceremony for the Simi Valley Family YMCA expansion. There was tremendous excitement in the air, but also a steep funding mountain left to climb. The Becky Valentine Foundation believed in this vision from the start, making an early $500,000 commitment as the lead contributor to spark community momentum.

Fast-forward 10 months: the finish line is in sight! This morning, we joined community leaders for an incredible grant presentation where the State of California awarded $1 Million to help carry this project all the way home.

Yes, the State officially knocked us down to the #2 spot overall, but we couldn’t be prouder to stand as the largest non-profit funder of this historic expansion.

It was an honor to celebrate this milestone alongside Southeast Ventura County YMCA CEO Ronnie Stone, Simi Valley Family YMCA Senior Executive Director Kris Turner, Dee Dee Cavanaugh, Mayor of City of Simi Valley and California State Assemblymember Jacqui Irwin who championed this funding at the state level to ensure our community gets the resources it deserves.

This project expands the current 23,000-square-foot facility into a 40,000-square-foot Multigenerational Community Center. More importantly, it will triple the Y’s capacity to reach 15,000 community members annually with a new gymnasium, expanded wellness spaces, an inclusive indoor/outdoor Kids' Zone playground, and a fully renovated aquatic center.

Our Board of Trustees recently met some of our scholarship recipients in person at Kettering University! We don’t just evaluate programs through annual reports; our board visits our grantee campuses in person to see the impact in action and speak directly with the scholars turning opportunity into achievement.

I still remember the silence in my 7th-grade classroom 25 years ago today. Coming in early, hearing the news, and feeling the world shift beneath us as kids. For those of us who lived through 9/11, that day permanently reshaped our sense of community, resilience, and responsibility to one another.

The students we serve today weren’t yet born in 2001. They learn about 9/11 through history books. But the lesson remains the same: in times of uncertainty, education, empathy, and coming together are how we build a resilient future.

At The Becky Valentine Foundation, we believe that spirit shouldn’t just belong to moments of crisis. It should drive how we show up for our communities and our planet every day.
