June 3, 2026, First Wednesday Luncheon:

Naming New Jersey: Naming New Jersey: The Etymology of its Historical and Geographical Landmarks

For the Westfield Historical Society’s First Wednesday Luncheon series in April guests are welcome to a luncheon at Echo Lake Country Club at 515 Springfield Ave, Westfield, NJ 07090 on Wednesday, June 3, 2026, beginning with check-in at 11:45am (usually ends @2:15).
Author and historian Scott Salmon will present Naming New Jersey, a talk exploring the etymology—the study of the origins and meanings of words—behind the names of the state’s towns, neighborhoods, and geographical landmarks. Drawing on more than four years of research and his recently published book, Salmon examines how centuries of history, language, and culture shaped place names across New Jersey’s 21 counties. The presentation traces influences from Lenape, Dutch, and English sources, challenges long held myths, and reveals the often-surprising stories behind familiar names such as Newark, Pluckemin, and Ho Ho Kus.
Those wishing to attend the luncheon may make a reservation by email to [email protected]; or, by calling 908-654-1794, before Thursday, May 28, 2026. Please advise if there are special dietary needs. The luncheon fee of $40 (WHS members) or $45 (non-members) includes a three-course meal, coffee/tea, and gratuity.
