OCSEA President Chris Mabe said staffing levels remain the biggest problem for youth prisons in Ohio.

"The size of DYS facilities doesn't matter as much as staffing levels," he said in a prepared statement. "As we've seen at Indian River, the Department of Youth Services had been unable to fix chronic understaffing that has led to violent assaults on staff and youth. DYS needs to change its culture and leadership to make a real difference."

Ohio DYS broke ground on two 36-bed youth prisons in Grafton, beginning its plan to build smaller facilities in hopes of addressing safety issues.

OCSEA brother Philip Pohle is telling a rare story of survival in a recent spotlight by WBNS 10TV about his near internal decapitation on the job. Most don't live to tell their story. Click below to here about his journey.

OCSEA is grateful that Brother Pohle is moving successfully through the recovery process. And his co-workers and union family have been there every step of the way. Pohle's OCSEA Chapter 3700 and the ODNR Assembly have helped out the member and family with donations and Easter gifts.
