In the United States, fall migration is happening right now! That means hundreds of millions of birds will be flying overhead many of our towns and cities. Birds need these areas to rest and refuel for the rest of their journey south. That’s why we’re calling on Congress to support the passage of the Local Communities and Bird Habitat Stewardship Act. Microplastics are turning up in an unexpected place: aquatic insects living in some of the watershed’s forested streams.

Researchers found microplastics in one-third of the insects they examined — and they were prevalent in both urban and forested areas. Manatawny Creek, whose headwaters are well forested, had the highest levels in the study.

The finding underscores just how pervasive plastic pollution has become — and raises new questions about where it’s coming from.

The study was a collaboration among scientists at Stroud Water Research Center, California State University, Bakersfield, and Millersville University. Dr. John Wallace from Millersville led the project, with Dr. Rae McNeish from CSU as lead author, and Dr. Jackson from the Stroud Center.

WHYY’s Zoë Read spoke with Stroud Center Senior Research Scientist John Jackson, Ph.D., about what decades of preserved insects can tell us about microplastic pollution in our region.
