Members from CMWC were hard at work again this week assisting DCNR with another prescribed fire. And participated in Earth day at Mill Cove today. Crew members spoke with several interested folks on who we are what we do along with some of our tools of the trade.

Jon Petrencsik (Cedar Mt 1) using the very pistol, shooting flares to "build depth".

Building depth means we want to ignite the fuels deeper inside the unit. It helps pull the fire from the edge (containment lines) towards the middle. Doing so helps prevent the fire from crossing our lines. Also, if the vegetation is too thick or the terrain is too rough to safely put hand held (drip torches) ignition teams in, you can accomplish the same goal from a safer location.

Over the past 3 days, members of the crew put in a lot of hours assisting the Tioga Forest District with their prescribed fires. Total of 3 grass units and 1 woods unit.

We use prescribed fire as a great opportunity to train members in areas such as firing operations, holding tasks, supervisory roles, communication skills, and suppression tactics just to name a few.

First up for our monthly appreciation post

Greg Berndtson

Greg has been a vital member of our crew since day one, being one of the original founding members that worked tirelessly to create the Cedar Mountain Wildfire Crew. He has served as our crew president, and currently serving as our vice president and our lead sawyer.

Outside of the crew, Greg is the owner of Berndtson Timber Management and currently working on becoming a certified burn manager.

Greg has helped the crew by leading in house saw safety training courses with newer members and those that want to be more comfortable using a chainsaw for fire operations. He has racked up countless hours on both fire assignments and assisting Tioga State Forest with prescribed fire.
