Here is some great tips for beginners…

🚨Here are the must-know rules based on National Mah Jongg League play. This is only a very small number of rules, seeing as we have many. With beginners, we have to learn not to overwhelm.

🀄 1. You can’t take every tile you want

This is the #1 mistake beginners make.

👉 You can only take a discard if:
✔ It completes a set of 3 or more (pung/kong)
✔ You must expose it immediately. Place it on the flat part of your rack, then add the tiles that complete the meld.

❌ No saving it
❌ No “I’ll use this later”

👉 Exception: You can take a tile for Mah Jongg

🀄 2. Once you expose… it’s exposed

👉 If you call a tile and put down your meld…

✔ It stays face up
✔ You can’t take it back, no changes
✔ You’re committed to that direction

🀄 3. Jokers have rules (and limits)

👉 Jokers can ONLY be used in:
✔ Pungs, kongs, quints

❌ NOT in singles
❌ NOT in pairs
❌ NOT in runs- these are treated as singles- NEWS, 2026, 113579

👉 But, they can be exchanged if someone has the real tile

🀄 4. Every hand must match the card exactly

👉 You are NOT building random sets

You are building:
✔ A specific hand
✔ From the current NMJL card
✔ Exactly as written

👉 If it doesn’t match the card… it’s not a hand

🀄 5. The order of a turn matters

This builds confidence fast:

👉 Pick (from the wall or a discard)
👉 Decide
👉 Rack or expose
👉 Discard

No skipping steps. No rushing.

🀄 6. You don’t need a full plan to start

Beginners think:
👉 “I need to know my whole hand”

Nope.

Start with:
✨ a pair
✨ a pattern
✨ something that connects

That’s how hands are built.

🀄 7. You can’t change your mind after a discard

👉 Once a tile leaves your hand… it’s gone

No take-backs (even if you panic 😅)

🀄 8. When your hand is dead… you keep playing

👉 You don’t stop
👉 You don’t announce it

You:
✔ Keep picking
✔ Keep discarding
✔ Try not to help anyone else win

🀄 9. Mah Jongg = 14 tiles (final hand)

👉 Your winning hand is:
✔ 14 tiles
✔ Matching the card exactly
