Join AFJ Action on Wednesday, May 27 at 3pm ET for Gavel In: ICE Attacks and How States are Fighting Back, a discussion breaking down how state and local officials can subvert the Trump administration’s abuse of power and hold the government accountable. AFJ Action President Rachel Rossi will be joined by Lauren Bonds, Executive Director of the National Police Accountability Project; Ian Millhiser, Senior Correspondent at Vox; and Matthew Lopas, Director of State Advocacy & Technical Assistance at the National Immigration Law Center to discuss these timely issues.
Over the last year, the Trump administration has launched an all-out assault on cities like Minneapolis, Washington, DC, and Portland and as well as attacks on immigrant populations by weaponizing national guard troops against state residents and sending Border Patrol and Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) to kidnap people off the streets or to forcibly enter private homes.
As a result, communities are defending against these intrusions, occupations, and attacks on their livelihoods and basic civil and human rights. State and local elected officials are utilizing the tools at their disposal to craft legislation and policy directives to hold federal officials accountable and suing their own governments in state court over the abuses against their people, opening a conversation to determine where federal abuse of power ends and accountability in the states starts. These conversations also explore how state and federal constitutional powers should be balanced.
Gavel In: ICE Attacks and How States are Fighting Back will take place via StreamYard and streamed through AFJ Action’s YouTube channel and page. The event will be recorded.
