What happens when nonprofit organizations have to spend more time defending their work than doing it?

Many organizations focused on equity are facing the prospect of legal risks like expensive lawsuits or losing their tax-exempt status. But with the Nonprofit Legal Defense Network, We The Action is stepping in to help nonprofits overwhelmed by legal threats with a community of more than 55,000 lawyers ready to provide pro-bono legal support.

Civil rights laws haven't changed, but racial equity nonprofits feel exposed to lawsuits because of the Trump administration's conservative interpretation of the law.

Where can you learn ASL, show off your Mario Kart skills, and meet new people on the dance floor — all in one place?

In Jackson, Mississippi, that place is Briarwood Arts Center, a vibrant Civic Home led by Stephen Brown, a 2026 Change Collective fellow.

Stephen is helping his neighbors build community by learning new skills and creating opportunities to meet and gather across shared interests. Meaningful connections are critical at a time when more than half of American adults feel isolated and left out, and two out of three Gen Zers want to belong.

With support from Change Collective, Stephen is building a model with the Briarwood Arts Center that can be replicated across Mississippi. His impact is already expanding: this past year, he took ownership of Riverside Community Coffeehouse in South Jackson — a co-working café and ice cream shop that doubles as an entrepreneurship hub for teens, helping them discover their purpose and build roots in their community.

This is what rebuilding civic life looks like.

A vibrant, inclusive democracy depends on participation from every eligible voter.

For the past two weeks, the Senate has been debating the SAVE America Act, a bill that would require all Americans to prove their citizenship in order to register to vote.

More than 21 million Americans don’t have easy access to documents like a birth certificate or passport. This bill disproportionately impacts Black and Brown voters, Indigenous communities, naturalized citizens, rural voters, married women and trans voters who have changed their name, and voters with disabilities who rely on vote-by-mail.

At the same time, research has shown that voter fraud is exceedingly rare — the highest estimate is only .0025%. Election officials in every state have safeguards in place, such as voter registration verification, signature matching, and post-election audits, to protect the integrity of our elections.

At Civic Nation, we’re focused on protecting fundamental rights, safety, and freedoms. Building a strong civic culture requires us to stand up for communities who have historically been excluded from fully participating in our democracy.

Building a vibrant democracy requires that eligible voters participate fully and freely, with trust in our institutions.

By 2030, more than 20 million Americans will take action, solve problems, and help their communities thrive with Civic Nation. That's the future we're working toward.

That means 20 million people casting their votes in every election, connecting with their neighbors and communities, and coming together to ensure democracy works for everyone.

Over the past 11 years, we’ve launched initiatives guided by the belief that progress happens when citizens come together to overcome challenges, big and small. Our vision is a vibrant, inclusive, and participatory democracy where people have the tools to take action and help their communities thrive.

Now we’re building the foundation for a better future:

1️⃣ Protecting fundamental rights, safety, and freedoms with We The Action and It's On Us,

2️⃣ Inspiring and engaging the next generation to lead in our democracy with ALL IN Campus Democracy Challenge and When We All Vote,

3️⃣ Building lasting civic infrastructure in communities across the country with Change Collective.

Our Civic Nation 2030 Strategic Plan lays out how we’ll strengthen civic power, civic culture, and civic participation in the years ahead.

🤔 How are you helping the next generation lead in our democracy?

Many young people today feel disengaged from civic life because they don’t believe their participation will make a difference. But history tells a different story. College students have long helped shape and strengthen our democracy.

That’s why Wesleyan University President, Michael S. Roth — a signer of the ALL IN Campus Democracy Challenge President’s Commitment — is calling on colleges and universities to expand opportunities for civic learning, organizing, and dialogue on campuses.

Higher education has an opportunity to help students see that democracy isn’t just something we study. It’s something we practice every day.

What better way to celebrate the nation’s 250th?

As we close out 2025, we’re reflecting on a year dedicated to listening.

We know that trust in our institutions, and in each other, has been tested. That’s why we spent this year focused on learning how to strengthen our civic culture, power, and participation in a way that will be truly transformative.

This year was about laying the foundation. We are proud of the work we’ve done to set the stage for the future alongside ALL IN Campus Democracy Challenge, Change Collective, It's On Us, We The Action, and When We All Vote.

This groundwork has led us to Civic Nation 2030 — our commitment to engaging millions of Americans to take action and help their communities thrive.

We are ready to hit the ground running in 2026. Are you with us? https://bit.ly/3KSWDva
