High in the mountains of Jomolhari, Soe School is where learning and conservation come together.

Through the ๐’๐œ๐ก๐จ๐จ๐ฅ ๐€๐ฆ๐จ๐ง๐  ๐’๐ง๐จ๐ฐ ๐‹๐ž๐จ๐ฉ๐š๐ซ๐๐ฌ initiative, the Bhutan Foundation supports learning opportunities for children while nurturing their connection to the extraordinary wildlife and landscapes they call home.

In ๐Ÿ๐ŸŽ๐Ÿ๐Ÿ“, the Bhutan Foundation supported the first Nomad Health Camp at Soe, Jomolhari, bringing essential healthcare closer to highland communities where distance and rugged terrain make access difficult. Led by Khesar Gyalpo University of Medical Sciences of Bhutan, the first camp reached more than 181 highlanders.

More than a decade later, that mission continues. In 2025โ€“ 2026, the health camp at Jomolhari reached 435 people, while the wider programme served 2,898 people across highland communities in Thimphu, Bumthang, Wangdue Phodrang, and Trashigang.

As we look ahead to the ๐Ÿ๐Ÿ๐ญ๐ก ๐‰๐จ๐ฆ๐จ๐ฅ๐ก๐š๐ซ๐ข ๐Œ๐จ๐ฎ๐ง๐ญ๐š๐ข๐ง ๐…๐ž๐ฌ๐ญ๐ข๐ฏ๐š๐ฅ, ๐Ÿ๐Ÿ’โ€“๐Ÿ๐Ÿ“ ๐Ž๐œ๐ญ๐จ๐›๐ž๐ซ ๐Ÿ๐ŸŽ๐Ÿ๐Ÿ”, we celebrate not only the highlandsโ€™ culture and natural heritage, but also the health and wellbeing of the communities at their heart.

Through our PEaCE project, the Bhutan Foundation has supported the procurement of AI cameras to strengthen monitoring of snow leopards and other wildlife. The Department of Forests and Park Services recently installed the camera in Jigme Dorji National Park to pilot AI technology in wildlife monitoring.

๐Ÿ”๏ธ Preparing communities to welcome the world.

Ahead of the 12th Jomolhari Mountain Festival, the Thimphu Dzongkhag Administration, in partnership with the Department of Tourism, Bhutan, and with support from the Bhutan Foundation, is training community members in Soe in basic homestay operations, including culinary skills, housekeeping, and guest management.

The training will help local hosts welcome visitors with confidence while turning festival tourism into lasting livelihood opportunities for the highland community.

A two-day workshop on Green Nanotechnology and Green Nanomedicine is bringing together traditional medicine and emerging science to explore new possibilities for the future of Bhutanโ€™s Sowa Rigpa and traditional medicine system.

Organized by the National Centre for Traditional Medicine Services in collaboration with Menjong Sorig Pharmaceuticals Corporation Limited, and facilitated by Kadamba Technologies India, the workshop is supported by the Bhutan Foundation.

By strengthening research, technical capacity, and collaboration, this initiative is helping create pathways for traditional knowledge to grow through science, sustainability, and innovation.

First held on 23โ€“24 October 2013, the Jomolhari Mountain Festival was initiated by Jigme Dorji National Park in collaboration with the Bhutan Foundation to celebrate highland culture, promote ecotourism, raise awareness of biodiversity conservation, and strengthen community support for the snow leopard.

Over the years, it has grown into a much-loved gathering of the communities of Soe, Yaksa, Nubri and Lingzhi, welcoming more than 1,000 participants from Bhutan and beyond.

๐Ÿ”๏ธ The 12th Jomolhari Mountain Festival is nearing!

Held every year on 14 and 15 October, the Jomolhari Mountain Festival celebrates the culture and traditions of Bhutanโ€™s highland communities and their harmonious coexistence with the elusive snow leopard, the โ€œghost of the mountains.โ€

The Bhutan Foundation has partnered with the festival since its first edition in 2013. This year, as we celebrate our 40th anniversary, we will also mark another important milestone with the launch of the Jomolhari Mountain Festival Sustainability Plan.

Developed in partnership with the Lingzhi Drungkhag Administration , Thimphu Dzongkhag Administration, Department of Tourism, Bhutan, Paro Dzongkhag Administration, and Jigme Dorji National Park, Department of Forests and Park Services, the plan will help guide the festivalโ€™s long-term sustainability while strengthening opportunities and benefits for participating highland communities.

A three-day workshop at the The Wangduechhoeling Palace Museum and Cultural Centre - WPMCC brought together museum and cultural professionals from across Bhutan with colleagues from the Rubin Museum of Himalayan Art for shared learning, discussion, and practical exchange.

The sessions explored collections stewardship, curatorial practice, exhibition development, and institutional standards, while creating space for participants to share experiences, build connections, and explore opportunities for future collaboration.

Through its partnership with the Rubin Museum of Himalayan Art, the Bhutan Foundation helped bring this exchange to Bhutan, connecting local museum and cultural professionals with international experience and perspectives.
