The dairy industry asks cows to endure suffering at every stage of their lives.

At Dick Van Dam Dairy in California, undercover investigator Erin Wing documented cows caught in a cycle of exploitation, from being used for milk to enduring violence and neglect behind closed doors.

Her footage showed injured and downed cows being dragged, cows being kicked, jabbed and shocked, calves left to suffer in filthy conditions, and sick animals struggling without the care they needed.

The suffering documented was not just about one moment or one animal. It was part of a system that treats living, feeling beings according to what they can produce.

Cows feel fear. They feel pain. They form bonds. And what happens to them deserves to be seen.

The hardest part is knowing how little these animals ask of us.

They want safety. Comfort. Freedom from pain. The chance to simply exist without fear.

And yet so many animals spend their lives in systems where suffering is treated as routine.
We believe they deserve better than that. They deserve compassion while they are alive, not just sympathy after they are gone.

But looking away guarantees nothing changes.
Every investigation, every piece of evidence, and every person willing to pay attention helps bring what animals endure out of the shadows.

The more people see what is happening, the harder it becomes for that suffering to stay hidden.

They deserve to be seen, heard, and considered.

Corporate animal welfare promises don’t always match what investigators find behind closed doors.

Our investigations have documented suffering at facilities connected to major companies while animal welfare policies, pledges, claims, or certifications were in effect.

At Jannat Farm, a Tyson-contracted facility, we documented cruelty after Tyson had known about conditions there for years. At a Nestlé supplier, our investigation exposed a cow disbudded without pain relief, even though Nestle said it would work to eliminate disbudding starting in 2014. At Foster Farms, we documented mistreatment while the company publicly promoted animal welfare standards. At Cooke Aquaculture, we documented fish suffering while the facility carried Best Aquaculture Practices certification.

The welfare claims and certifications referenced in this reel were in effect at the time of each related investigation.

That’s why independent investigations matter. They show what corporate promises can leave out.

They play cheerful music as children tour the facility where more happens than what meets the eye. This is the version of farming many of us grow up seeing: families, farm tours, and a carefully presented look at where our food comes from.

Sunshine and Dani quite literally jumped to freedom.

Both piglets escaped from transport trucks in North Carolina and, against the odds, made it to safety. Rosie’s Farm Sanctuary took them in to give them the kind of life every pig deserves: safety, care, and the freedom to simply be pigs.

Their story is a reminder that every animal caught in our food system is an individual who wants to live.
