Lastmile4D Last Mile4D applies community-designed, “high tech/high touch” solutions to health, education and economic empowerment in its project from the last mile in

Last Mile4D was founded by Mahnaz M. Harrison and Audrey Bracey Deegan to address the challenges of implementing development recommendations in remote areas of the developing world– the “last mile”. In many cases, access to electric power was the missing link. Last Mile4D builds its projects from the periphery in, and applies its community-designed, “high tech/high touch” solutions to a variety of

fields, including, but not limited to: health, women’s/maternal health, health prevention, governance, education, workforce and economic development, all enabled by distributed renewable energy, mobile technology and Information Communication Technologies (ICTs). Our unique approach brings information, services and resources to remote communities so they ultimately can connect to mainstream development solutions— working from the last mile in.

A moment that reached beyond the school grounds. 🌱

This graduation at Kutung Primary wasn’t just about celebration—it was about visibility. The voices of these students, and the change happening in their community, are being seen and heard far beyond the classroom.

Each step forward matters. Each girl who stays in school, each boy who chooses to stand beside her, and each community that decides to protect its children is part of something bigger.

Three schools, one powerful promise. 🌱

On April 10th, students from Poole, Boroko, and Komosoko Primary Schools celebrated more than a graduation—it was a moment of courage, growth, and choosing a different future.

Girls stepped forward as leaders, boys stood beside them as allies, and entire communities showed up to support lasting change. From certificates to tree planting, every moment reflected a commitment to protect, educate, and uplift.

These young champions leave with more than knowledge—they carry a message that will continue far beyond this day.

Over the second week of April, something powerful unfolded in Ntiyange.

What was once a community deeply affected by FGM is steadily rewriting its story—through courage, accountability, and the voices of young people choosing a different path.

This moment wasn’t just about a graduation. It was about a shift in mindset. A community standing together, leaders taking action, and students stepping into their roles as protectors, mentors, and changemakers.

The energy, the pride, the hope—it’s all growing. Just like the trees planted that day, this impact will continue to take root for generations to come. 🌱

Over the first week of April, something powerful took root 🌱

Across multiple schools in Migori county, students stepped into a new chapter—one defined not by tradition that harms, but by choices that protect, uplift, and empower. Each celebration was filled with joy, pride, and a deep sense of possibility as girls and boys stood together, choosing a different path forward.

These moments go beyond ceremonies. They reflect shifting mindsets, stronger community support, and a growing belief that every child deserves safety, education, and the freedom to dream.

With every tree planted, a promise was made—to stand with these students, to protect their futures, and to continue building a world where harmful practices no longer define their story.

This is how change happens. Quietly. Boldly. Together. 🌍✨

Change doesn’t always begin loudly—sometimes, it starts with a decision. 🌱

At Nasukuta Comprehensive School, something shifted. Not just in one moment, but in mindsets, in conversations, in what young people now believe is possible for their lives.

Girls who once faced pressure are now choosing their own paths. Boys are becoming allies, standing for respect and protection in their communities.

And beyond the ceremony, the ripple effects are already being felt—inside classrooms, in homes, and across the community.

This is how futures begin to change—for good.

In Elgeyo Marakwet County, the reality is heartbreaking.

FGM is not just a moment; it’s a turning point that too often leads girls into forced marriage and early motherhood before they even have a chance to choose their future.

In just 5 schools, 76 girls are already teen mothers.
23 in one school. 18 in another.
These aren’t numbers—they’re stories interrupted.

And their words stay with us:
If only we had known… if only Last Mile4D team came sooner.

That’s why this work matters.
Because knowledge is protection. Because timing is everything. Because every girl deserves the chance to decide her own path.

We have our work cut out—and we’re not stopping. 💛

Sometimes the most powerful voices are the ones the world has tried to silence.

In this moment, these girls are not just performing—they are speaking truth, releasing pain, and demanding to be heard. Every word carries the weight of what too many girls face, and the strength of a generation that is rising anyway.

Originally shared on TikTok by FriendsofChildrenCircle, this piece is a reminder that these stories are real, present, and cannot be ignored.

Through education and safe spaces, girls are finding their voices; and once they do, everything begins to change.

This is more than a poem.
It’s a refusal to stay quiet.
And a future being rewritten in real time.

Change starts quietly. In classrooms. In conversations. In the moment a girl begins to see her future differently.

As our team visits new schools, we’re not just introducing a program — we’re opening doors. Doors to knowledge, to confidence, and to the understanding that girls have the right to make choices about their own lives.

For many, this is the first time they are hearing that their voice matters. And once that truth takes root, it cannot be taken away.

This is how we move forward; by meeting girls where they are, standing alongside them, and ensuring they are never alone in shaping their future.
