New capital, who dis? 🗺️ in 1800, President John Adams became the first sitting president to arrive in Washington, D.C., a city still very much under construction. The city he rode into was shaping up to look like this: Pierre Charles L'Enfant's sweeping vision for a capital worthy of a republic, with grand avenues, monumental spaces, and a design that still defines the D.C. we know today. 226 years later, D.C. is once again being built up for something big.

🇺🇸 We'll see you on Constitution Avenue this week for the Spirit of Independence Festival — steps from where it all began.

This May marks 84 years since the establishment of the Women's Army Corps! During World War II, American women were called to serve in noncombat roles to aid the war effort, and over 150,000 WACs served, eventually paving the way for future generations of women in the military. From its founding to recruitment posters to the now famed "Six Triple Eight" battalion, the US National Archives holds the history of these changemakers and their impact.
