Join Chocolate City Free DC for an evening of community and conversation as we confront federal attacks on DC, defend our voting rights, and protect DC Home Rule. Come learn about our mission and how to get involved in the work to protect Black political power and self-determination.

We’ll be joined by guest speakers:

Cora Masters Barry, former First Lady of DC and longtime educator in Black politics, will speak on “The Struggle for the Black Vote: Why Our Destiny Is Tied to Our Vote.”

Leslie E. Redmond, Esq., a proud DC native, attorney, founder of Don’t Complain, Activate, and former Minneapolis NAACP president, will join the conversation about defending our home and turning concern into action.

Whether you’ve joined us before or this is your first conversation with Chocolate City Free DC, bring your questions and a neighbor. There’s a place for you in this work.

🍫 Chocolate City Orientation🍫

What does a Free DC look like for Black Washingtonians?

Chocolate City is a Black organizing space within Free DC where Black Washingtonians can build relationships, develop political analysis, strategize around the issues affecting our communities, and imagine what a free DC must look like for Black people.

Tonight, we'll talk about the Free DC campaign, what's at stake for our communities, and how we can build our strategy for the fights ahead.

Whether you're new to Free DC or already organizing with us, pull up.

Join us TONIGHT at 7 PM for our virtual CourtWatch DC training.

As DC court lockup lists steadily increase, we need more community eyes in our courtrooms. CourtWatch DC trains everyday DC residents to step into courtrooms, document what happens, and help hold our court system accountable.

Courtwatching is a form of mutual aid. By putting community eyes in our courtrooms, we can document our city’s policies in action, bear witness to injustice, and build collective power toward an abolitionist future.

No legal experience needed. Just show up ready to learn how you can get involved.

The courts make decisions that shape our communities every day, but most of what happens inside them goes unseen.

And right now, watching matters.

As the Summer Surge brings increased federal law enforcement into DC, people are being arrested for low-level offenses and pushed into a court system that too often operates without public scrutiny.

Courtwatching is one way we make sure what happens inside those courtrooms doesn’t happen in the dark.

Join Courtwatch DC to learn how to observe court proceedings, document what you see, and help hold the system accountable. No legal experience needed, just a commitment to showing up for your community.

“Injustice happens in empty courtrooms.”

🚨 Court Support Needed 🚨

Join us this morning, June 2 at 11 AM for court support for the family of Kevin Hargraves-Shird.

Nearly four years after Kevin was killed by MPD Sergeant Reinaldo Otero-Camacho, a federal judge will decide whether his family will have the opportunity to present their case before a jury.

Thirteen eyewitnesses testified that they did not see Kevin with a gun and that he was running away when he was shot. Tomorrow's hearing will determine whether the family gets their day in court.

📍 333 Constitution Ave NW, Room 27A
🗓 Tuesday, June 2
⏰ 11:00 AM

If you have the capacity, please join us in supporting Kevin's family as they continue their fight for justice.

On March 23, Mayor Bowser vetoed the Full Accountability in Arrest Reporting (FAAR) Act. This common-sense bill would require DC police officers to document any federal agents present at an MPD arrest, document federal agents’ use of force, and to publish body-worn camera footage of that use of force. DC Council passed the bill unanimously, 13-0.

DC residents absolutely need and deserve more transparency about what federal agents are doing in our communities. On Tuesday, March 31, join us to pack the hearing room to make sure DC Council knows we want them to override Bowser’s veto and pass the FAAR Act again.

Sign up for one of two shifts. First shift will start at 10:30am and will include a morning press conference. Second shift will begin at 1:00pm and will include the discussion of FAAR. Sign up for the shift that works best for your schedule.
