BoricuActivated

BoricuActivated We empower individuals with the fundamentals of advocacy and storytelling to inspire lifelong community change.

Simultaneously, we strive to improve the quality of life in Puerto Rico by amplifying the collective voice of the Diaspora. BoricuActívatEd is a civic engagement initiative whose goal is to help those who want to engage with Congress on behalf of Puerto Rico. It is about empowering the five million Puerto Ricans living on the mainland (the Diaspora) to advocate for the interest of the 3.4 million living on the Island

May has been a month of powerful stories.

We celebrated the legacy of Andy Montañez, who carried Puerto Rican culture through six decades of music. We remembered Ruth Fernández, who proved that a singer could also be a senator. We honored our veterans on Memorial Day. And we asked you what civic engagement means to you.

The answer, as always, is everything.

This June, we will celebrate the history, the culture, and the civic power of our community. We will tell stories that don't always make it into the history books. We will connect the past to the present and the present to the future.

Stay with us. The best is coming.

Our mental health matters. Our stories matter. Our community matters.

At Boricua ActivatEd, we are committed to building a community where support, connection, and open conversations help people feel less alone. Together, we can break stigma, uplift one another, and remind people that healing, growth, and asking for help are signs of strength.

Thank you to James Martinez for helping raise awareness and for being part of this important conversation on mental health in our community.

Change is possible. But how do we make it happen?

At BoricuActivatEd, we believe it starts with knowing your power. For over 9 years, we've trained more than 5,000 people from D.C. to L.A. in the art of civic engagement. We teach the fundamentals of government, the best practices for advocacy, and how to use your personal story to create real change.
A great example is that, our workshops are for everyone. For the student who sees a problem in their community and wants to fix it. For the community organizer who wants to mobilize their neighbors. For the parent who wants to advocate for better schools.

April was a powerful month.

We celebrated Roselyn Sánchez, Olga Tañón, Luis Fonsi, and José de Diego. We talked about Earth Day and environmental stewardship. We talked about the Jones Act and what it means for Puerto Rican political rights. We talked about what civic engagement looks like in practice.

And through all of it, the message was the same: You have power. You just need the tools to use it.

That's what BoricuActivatED is here for.

May is coming. And we're just getting started. 🇵🇷

Foundations for Civic Leadership 101

If you live in Rhode Island or anywhere close (say Boston!) please join us in Providence, Rhode Island on Saturday, April 18 when in partnership with the Latinas Leadership Institute (LLI) and thanks to a generous grant from the Rhode Island Foundation, we plan to hold our first Rhode Island training! DM us if you want more details!

In a single half-day session, we partner with community organizations to provide a comprehensive overview of local and federal government. We share best practices for securing and conducting meetings with elected officials, and provide customized toolkits to help you create a roadmap for engagement.

Our workshops are taught by government relations professionals who have served as staff members in elected offices. They bring their real-world experience to the classroom, giving you the tools and confidence to make your voice heard.

Want to bring a BoricuActivatEd workshop to your community? Send us an email at [email protected] to start the conversation.

March was Women’s History Month and we spent it celebrating the Puerto Rican women who taught us what power looks like.

Ivy Queen who demanded space in reggaeton.

Luisa Capetillo who wore pants and got arrested for it.

Nydia Velázquez who kicked down doors in Congress.

Felisa Rincón de Gautier who transformed San Juan through bold leadership.

María Hinojosa who made space for Latino voices in journalism.

Sunny Hostin who uses her platform to challenge injustice and speak truth.

These women didn’t wait for permission. They didn’t ask nicely. They showed up spoke up and demanded change.

That’s what BoricuActivatEd teaches. We don’t teach people to be polite. We teach them to be powerful.

Because the women who came before us didn’t fight for us to stay quiet.

April starts tomorrow. Let’s keep building.

As we close out February, I want to say Gracias.

Thank you for showing up. Thank you for engaging. Thank you for believing that your community deserves better.

This month, we talked about Bad Bunny, Black History Month, know your rights, and what it means to organize your community.

But here's what it all comes down to: civic engagement isn't about politics. It's about power.

It's about knowing you have the right to speak up, the tools to organize, and the community to back you up.

At BoricuActivatEd, we're not waiting for permission. We're building power. And we're doing it together.

If you want to be part of this, visit boricuactivated.org.

Let's keep going. 🇵🇷

Reflection

02/26/2026

This month, we watched Bad Bunny make history. At the Grammys, at the Super Bowl, on the world stage.

And I kept asking myself: How do we take this moment and turn it into lasting power?

Because here's what I know: young people showed up for Bad Bunny. They learned his lyrics. They organized watch parties. They celebrated their culture.

That's civic engagement. They just don't call it that.

So here's my question for you:

What if we stopped expecting young people to care about civics the way we do and started meeting them where they are?

That's what BoricuActivatEd does. We don't ask people to choose between culture and civics. We show them how culture IS civic power.

So tell me: What's something you're passionate about—music, sports, art, fashion—that you wish you could turn into real change in your community?

Drop it in the comments. Let's talk about how to make it happen.

Because if Bad Bunny can move millions of people, we can teach them how to move systems.

Two weeks ago, Bad Bunny performed at the Super Bowl.

Millions of young people watched. They felt pride. They felt seen.

And then... life went back to normal.

That's the thing about culture: it creates these incredible moments of collective attention. But then the moment passes.

Here's what I want you to know: that energy doesn't have to disappear.

The same skills young people use to engage with culture—learning lyrics, organizing watch parties, debating on group chats, creating memes—are the exact same skills they need for civic engagement.

The difference? We've never taught them how to make that connection.

At BoricuActivatED, we do.

We teach people how to:
- Turn group chats into organizing committees
- Turn passion into testimony at public meetings
- Turn social media energy into voter registration drives
- Turn cultural pride into political power

Because here's the truth: young people aren't disengaged. They're just not engaged in the ways we expect them to be.

They know Bad Bunny better than their governor because we've made culture immersive and civics invisible.

But it doesn't have to be that way.

If you can organize a Super Bowl party, you can organize your community.

If you can learn every word to "Debí Tirar Más Fotos," you can learn who represents you.

If you care about Puerto Rico enough to celebrate Bad Bunny, you care enough to fight for it.

We just have to show you how.

Visit boricuactivated.org. Let's turn culture into civic power.
