"IRAQI REFUGEE STORIES: Three Poems for Iraq by Zeina Azzam
1.
Bring the moon with you-
it is the only witness
to our worn shoes,
the faces we left behind.
Tether it to your arm
and bring the moon with you,
a lantern to light the river,
the way to our stories."

IF YOU LIKE THIS, COME HEAR Zeina Azzam ON MARCH 14, 2026 from 1-3pm at Tenley Library, 4450 Wisconsin Ave. NW, DC for MidnightRose: A Reading Series of Poetry and Prose. IT'S FREE. There will be snacks and door prizes. Don't miss this gifted poet and Karl W. Carter who also will read from his award-winning poetry books.

Few American writers have proved so alluring to the censors as Toni Morrison. What made her one of our greatest — and most dangerous — novelists was her belief that stories could contain what our minds couldn’t confront, writes the critic Parul Sehgal. https://nyti.ms/4s1ISKG

This year marks 100 years of Black History Month.
A century of remembering. A century of reclaiming.

But our history didn’t begin in 1926.
It lives in our bloodlines, our names, and the ancestors we carry with us every day.

This Black History Month, we invite you to go beyond the surface to reconnect with your roots and who you are.

In his book, No More Worlds to Conquer: The Black Poet in Washington, DC, author Brian Gilmore provides a detail examination of the African American literary community and the powerful literature its members have created for more than 100 years. Inside that larger story is also the tale of Black women writers in the nation's capital. The National Women's Foundation and Esther Productions Inc. will present a literary salon on March 18 from 5:30-7:30pm featuring Gilmore, Marcia Davis, Teri Ellen Cross Davis and Tracy Chiles McGhee exploring the life and legacy of some of those women. PLEASE COME. Brian will also sign books. GET TICKETS HERE:
