We applaud Representatives Congresswoman Kim Schrier (D-WA) and Congressman John Joyce (R-PA) and Senator Jeanne Shaheen (D-NH) and Senator Susan Collins (R-ME) for introducing the Strengthening Collective Resources for Encouraging Education Needed (SCREEN) for Type 1 Diabetes (T1D) Act of 2026. The bipartisan legislation aims to increase awareness and improve early detection of T1D.

Screening and early detection of T1D can save lives, help people make important decisions about their health, and potentially change the course of this disease.

Too often, children and adults are diagnosed only after becoming critically ill. Screening for T1D can be done through a simple blood test, and ongoing monitoring can help families avoid medical emergencies and take action sooner.

Another step forward! Our champions and Congressional Diabetes Caucus Co-Chairs Congresswoman Diana DeGette and Congressman Gus Bilirakis just sent a letter to the FDA noting our HHS proposal and urging a new look at the regulatory pathway for deceased donor islets.

These islets can help people with type 1 diabetes today. The pathway needs to catch up, and we'll keep pushing until it does.

Thank you to our champions in the House!

🏛️Advocacy in Action

Bryce became involved with Breakthrough T1D Advocacy to use his voice to create real change — and he got to see these efforts come to life last month in Washington, D.C. While on the Hill, in addition to thanking Congress for extending and increasing the Special Diabetes Program, Bryce informed his U.S. Senators about the INSULIN Act, legislation that was introduced at the end of March to ensure everyone with has affordable access to insulin.

Bryce has personal experience making the impossible choice between buying textbooks for grad school or filling his insulin prescription, so this legislation is particularly important to him. Thank you, Bryce, for using your story to influence lawmakers and create change! Join Bryce in urging your Senators to cosponsor the INSULIN Act today: BreakthroughT1D.org/Advocacy

For families facing type 1 diabetes (T1D), new scientific advances bring meaningful hope. Annie, who lives with T1D, shares her story as a mother of a 7-year-old son who has T1D autoantibodies and, up until now, had no options for intervention.

With the new U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approval of Tzield for children ages 1 and up, there is now a therapy that can delay the progression of T1D. This milestone represents a very significant step forward for families like Annie’s—offering more time without needing insulin, which means additional years without the physical, emotional, and financial burdens of this disease.

We applaud the FDA for this approval. This progress moves us closer to cures for T1D.
