A heartfelt thank you to the and to Jonathan Willen and Puffin Travers for their incredible support of Building Bridges Across the River. We are deeply grateful for their commitment to our mission and the communities we serve east of the Anacostia River.

Today, Sarah and Michael from our Development team, alongside our President & CEO Scott Kratz, had the opportunity to share updates from across our work, including our Comcast Lift Zone, the 11th Street Bridge Park as it prepares to break ground in just a few months, our newest partners Life Pieces To Masterpieces and Chesapeake Bay Outward Bound School, the return of Food & Farm Fridays beginning tomorrow, the newly named WC Smith Theater, and the beautiful new Washington School for Girls building that is bringing all students together on one campus.

Thank you for investing in a stronger, healthier, and more equitable future for our community. We are honored to have you as partners in this work.

On Tuesday, May 5, we proudly celebrated the naming of the WC Smith Theater at THEARC in honor of a legacy that has helped shape opportunity, creativity, and community east of the Anacostia River.

Through more than $15 million in financial and in-kind contributions, WC Smith’s commitment to Building Bridges Across the River and THEARC has helped create a true home for residents, artists, students, and families across Washington, DC. This theater has welcomed performances like the Washington Ballet’s Nutcracker, hosted the launch of Michelle Obama’s Healthy Foods Initiative, and served as the backdrop for countless graduations, spelling bees, performances, celebrations, and community gatherings.

We are deeply honored to recognize WC Smith’s incredible impact through this naming and to celebrate a legacy that will live on for generations to come. Thank you to our founders, Chris Smith and Skip McMahon, for your vision, leadership, and unwavering dedication to this community.

✨ Meet Destiny Bugg, Manager of Institutional Giving & Strategic Partnerships ✨

What is your favorite part of working at Building Bridges Across the River?
Definitely our team! Each person is so skilled at what they do and brings their own personal style to their work. This is an environment where people are encouraged and celebrated for being themselves, and I love seeing everyone shine in their own way.

What stands out to you in your work as a fundraiser and program manager?
As a fundraiser and program manager, I enjoy bringing resources to impactful programs while also playing a role in executing the vision and seeing the direct impact in our community.

What’s one fun fact about you?
I’ve danced since I was 5 years old and am still an active dancer! Next performance coming up on June 20th and 21st 🙂
