Trust for the National Mall Welcome! The Trust for the National Mall is the official nonprofit partner of the National Park Service caring for the National Mall. Bordered by the U.S.

The Trust for the National Mall aims to create a sense of stewardship and raise much-needed funds to sustainably restore our National Mall. Capitol, the White House and 10 Smithsonian Institution Museums in the heart of America’s capitol city, the National Mall is where the American story lives. The Washington Monument serves as a global beacon for democracy. The Lincoln Memorial is an iconic symbol for diversity and unity. The Vietnam Veteran’s Memorial powerfully reminds us of the very human cost of war. And for decades, the weary Mall grounds have served as a national stage for the turning point demonstrations and jubilant celebrations that have defined what it means to be American. The park hosts 29 million visits each year, more than Yellowstone, the Grand Canyon and Yosemite national parks combined. While most people think of the National Mall as it appears in postcards and movies – acres of pristine grounds dotted with perfectly polished memorials – the reality is a far cry from this idea.

- The National Mall is America’s most visited national park and it has no entrance fee. It is only funded through annual federal budgets that cover basic operations – but not major repairs and needed upgrades.

- Today, failed landscapes and aging monuments face serious structural problems – and hundreds of millions of dollars in deferred maintenance.

- Over a year ago, a 5-foot long chunk of stone fell from the Jefferson Memorial and the damaged area remains blocked off to visitors while it awaits repair.

- Missing ceiling tiles mar the breathtaking view inside the Lincoln Memorial.

- Flooded and cracked sidewalks near the war memorials are impassable to visitors in wheel chairs.

- Dead fish float atop a stagnant pond just east of the Vietnam Veteran’s Memorial.

- And the oldest building in the park, which is in the shadow of the Washington Monument, has sat boarded up for nearly 40 years. Together, with your help, we can save the crumbing symbols of democracy and preserve the still-unfolding story of America.

Our Chief Development Officer, Heather Lancaster, recently attended a public history event at the Lockkeeper’s House, the oldest structure on the National Mall.

Hosted by Trust for the National Mall and the National Park Service, the event celebrated the first anniversary of the National Mall Gateway, a digital learning platform that has connected more than 30,000 visitors with the Mall’s history and civic stories.

Everyone knows the Yoshino 🌸 but DC's National Mall is home to 11+ cherry blossom varieties — Kwanzan, Akebono, Weeping, Takesimensis, Sargent, and more.

Here's what most people don't know: the Autumn Flowering Cherry doesn't play by the rules. It's only ~3% of the trees, but on a warm day in fall or even winter, you can catch it blooming near the Washington Monument.

🏛️ There's a room under the Lincoln Memorial. For 100 years, almost no one saw it.

Beneath the marble and the 19-foot statue sits a forest of concrete columns. It's the undercroft, and after a century hidden underground, it's finally open.

Walk through nearly 15,000 square feet of exhibit space built right into the memorial's foundation and see the history up close.

Reserve a ticket in advance at recreation.gov, or grab a same-day ticket each morning at the kiosk by the Korean War Veterans Memorial.

There's a founding father sitting alone near the Tidal Basin. Most people never find him. 🪑

George Mason authored the Virginia Declaration of Rights. He also wrote the blueprint for the Bill of Rights, and refused to sign the U.S. Constitution because it didn't include one. His memorial, tucked quietly off the beaten path, was completed in 1997 and funded entirely through private support.

In 2019, the Trust for the National Mall restored it with NPS: rebuilding the central fountain, refurbishing the statue, and adding vibrant garden plantings, giving this corner of the Mall the care and attention it deserves!

There's so much history behind every monument, and every monument was once just a vision. 🏛️
