They were told to load the shipment. They said no.

In October 2026, airport workers at Paris Charles de Gaulle refused to handle a shipment of mechanical components reportedly destined for Israeli defense company Elbit Systems Land. Supported by trade unions and solidarity networks, workers challenged the movement of military-related goods by withholding their labor.

Nonviolence is not simply the absence of violence. It is the active refusal to cooperate with systems that enable it.From factories to airports to railway networks, workers have the power to interrupt business as usual and draw a line between earning a living and contributing to harm.

Dissent during national anthems turns a ritual of unity into a moment of resistance.

Anthems are meant to unite, which is exactly why refusing to join in carries so much weight. In 1968, Tommie Smith and John Carlos raised their fists on an Olympic podium. In 2016, Colin Kaepernick took a knee to protest police violence. In Hong Kong, football fans turned their backs on the anthem and booed.

Every ban on a weapon that harms civilians started with people organizing. Since the 1990s, global coalitions have practiced "citizen diplomacy," working with survivors and supportive governments to build new international norms. Some have won treaties and now push for their implementation. Others are still building the norm.

In 2024, Sofia Orr refused to enlist in the Israeli military. At 18, she chose imprisonment over compulsory military service, citing her opposition to the occupation of Palestinian territories and the war in Gaza.

Her refusal was an act of conscientious objection: choosing non-participation rather than taking part in military activity she believed conflicted with her conscience.

By saying no to enlistment, Orr challenged the expectation that military service is an unquestioned duty. Her story shows how refusing to participate can become a form of nonviolent resistance. Her refusal challenged the expectation that obedience is automatic and demonstrated how individuals can use their own participation, or lack thereof, to take a stand.

Sometimes, saying no is an act of conviction.

In 2026, activists gathered outside the Tunisian Embassy in Washington, D.C., to call for the release of the Sumud Four. Among them was Michael B**r of Nonviolence International, joining fellow activists in using a visible picket to draw attention to the detainees and make their demand heard.

Across Spain, a growing housing movement is challenging evictions, unaffordable rents, speculation, and the transformation of homes into financial assets.

Tenants' unions, neighborhood organizations, and anti-eviction groups have spent years building collective power. Demonstrations, encampments, tenant organizing, and campaigns are turning individual experiences of housing insecurity into a broader movement.

This is nonviolent resistance in practice. It isn't only about marching or protesting. It's about people organizing collectively, withholding cooperation, occupying public space, building networks, and creating enough pressure that institutions and powerful actors have to respond.
