"Miss Maplethorpe from our Speech & Language Department went above and beyond for our students — she handmade these incredible sensory chairs for kids who struggle with sensory processing.
The tennis balls on the seat and backrest give a totally different texture, helping students with autism, Down syndrome, sensory processing disorders (and more) regulate their senses while they learn.
And the best part? She made them herself — with love, creativity, and a whole lot of heart.
Because every student deserves a classroom that works for them.
Want to make your own sensory chairs? Here’s how:
You’ll need:
A chair
Half-cut tennis balls
Fabric
Mod Podge
Paintbrush or sponge
Hot glue
How to:
Brush Mod Podge on the seat/backrest, lay fabric over it.
Seal fabric with more Mod Podge & let dry 20–30 mins.
Hot glue the half tennis balls onto the seat/backrest.
Tuck and glue excess fabric underneath for a clean, upholstered look.
Add extra glue around each tennis ball for extra hold.
And that’s it — your sensory chair is ready to support some awesome kids!"
