Tonight, the Franciscan family commemorates the Transitus of St. Francis of Assisi, his passage from this life into eternal life.

On October 3, 1226, as his earthly life drew to a close, Francis prepared to meet the Lord he had sought to follow in poverty, humility, and complete trust. Even in the face of death, his heart remained fixed on praise. The man who had called the sun his brother, the moon his sister, and all creation to glorify its Creator could even welcome death as โ€œSister.โ€

The Transitus is more than a remembrance of the death of St. Francis. It is the celebration of a life given wholly to Christ reaching its fulfillment. Francis had spent his life seeking to conform himself to the poor and crucified Lord, and in his final hours he entrusted himself completely to the mercy of God.

Eight hundred years later, the Franciscan family continues to gather on this night to remember his passing, give thanks for his witness, and ask for the grace to follow Christ with the same simplicity, joy, and fidelity.

Holy Father Francis, pray for us, that when our own earthly pilgrimage is complete, we too may be found faithful to the Lord.

This service is a solemn reenactment of The Burial of Christ and is very similar to the ceremony reenacted each year on Good Friday at the Church of the Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem. There are very few places outside of the Holy Land where this ceremony is performed. The friars process through the church with a figure of the Lord after his body has been removed from the cross at the Altar of Calvary. At the conclusion of the procession, the โ€œbodyโ€ is placed on the anointing stone and, with measured solemnity, is lavishly incensed and anointed. The body is then placed into the Sepulchre itself and, as they leave, the door is dramatically slammed shut โ€” to be reopened on the โ€œthird day.โ€
