ULI, the Urban Land Institute, is a 501(c) (3) nonprofit research and education organization supported by its members. Founded in 1936, we now have almost 40,000 members worldwide, representing the entire spectrum of land use and real estate development disciplines working in private enterprise and public service. A multidisciplinary real estate forum, ULI facilitates an open exchange of ideas, information, and experience among industry leaders and policy makers dedicated to creating better places. ⚓ From Spanish galleons to pirate legends — Tampa Bay's waters have been carrying stories for centuries.

Long before it was a postcard-perfect skyline, Tampa Bay was a crossroads for Timucua and Seminole communities, Spanish explorers charting the Gulf, and (according to local lore) more than a few pirates who used its winding inlets to hide from the law. Today, those same waters tell a new story — and you're invited to be part of it.

What do old power plants, printing presses, and candy factories have in common?
They're becoming some of today's most creative housing, office, and community spaces.

Cities are running low on buildable land. Meanwhile, many industrial buildings sit empty—too specialized, too costly to reuse.

These 5 developments proved otherwise:
- 1921 coal power plant in Philadelphia
- Milwaukee newspaper printing complex
- 1948 glass factory in San Antonio
- Wartime measurement tools factory in Poughkeepsie
- 1940s candy factory in Toronto

Each project kept the bones of the building intact while completely reimagining what happens inside.

Recognizing the urgent need for coordinated recovery efforts after the January 2025 LA wildfires, ULI Los Angeles, the UCLA Ziman Center for Real Estate, and the USC Lusk Center for Real Estate came together to convene ~100 leading experts — including ULI members — spanning land use, real estate, infrastructure, and economic development.
