Just a reminder: Dredging operations continue in Sloop Channel, so our Hatteras-Ocracoke vehicle ferry is running an alternate schedule that has the last ferry leaving Hatteras each night at 8:30 p.m. and last ferry out of Ocracoke at 9. Please plan your visit accordingly!

Starting on Friday June 12, the NC North Carolina Ferry System will add an 830PM departure from Ocracoke to Hatteras to the amended schedule being used during Sloop Channel dredging. As of June 9 the dredging had removed 21,202 cubic yards of the 50,000 total objective.

🚢 Keeping a vital Outer Banks transportation route open and accessible.

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Wilmington District, and contractor Cottrell Contracting Corporation are conducting maintenance dredging in Hatteras Sloop North Channel to help maintain safe and reliable navigation for ferry traffic between Hatteras and Ocracoke.

Approximately 50,000 cubic yards of shoaled material will be removed during this effort. The project includes both federally funded channel maintenance and additional non-federal channel widening work supported through state and local partnerships.

To minimize impacts to ferry operations, dredging is being conducted overnight between 10 p.m. and 6 a.m. in coordination with the North Carolina Ferry Division. Work is expected to continue through June 20.

This effort helps support continued access for residents, visitors, businesses and emergency services that rely on one of North Carolina's most important ferry routes.

Mariners are reminded to monitor Notices to Mariners, follow posted warnings, reduce speed when passing dredging operations, and monitor VHF channels 13 and 16 when operating near work areas.
