MRA is the largest nonprofit funder of melanoma research. 100% of donations go to life-saving science. 🔬 Learn more at CureMelanoma.org Cornerstones of the MRA vision include:

* Supporting innovative, high risk research that has the potential to impact the outcomes of melanoma in the near and intermediate future.
* Engaging the international community for best ideas, proposal submissions,

cross-disciplinary teams, and as members of the MRA Scientific Advisory Board and Grant Review Committee.
* Creating a stable financial environment that will draw young investigators with novel ideas as well as experienced researchers in other medical fields into a career in melanoma.
* Seeking opportunities for synergy with other funders to maximize impact.
* Maintaining an efficient, non-bureaucratic grant application process that allows the investigators to minimize time in administrative duties.
* Fostering a collaborative research process - in team science awards; workshops and conferences where results will be shared before publication and new opportunities identified early.
* Partnering with industry, government agencies, other foundations as well as academicians in order to stimulate discussion and idea-generation throughout the continuum of science, public policy, drug approval and healthcare.

Exciting news for skin cancer prevention!

The FDA has approved bemotrizinol for use in U.S. sunscreens. It is the first new active sunscreen ingredient approved in more than 20 years.

Already used in Europe and other countries around the world, bemotrizinol provides broad-spectrum protection against both UVA and UVB rays and is considered safe and effective for adults and children over six months of age.

This milestone reflects years of advocacy and collaboration across the skin cancer prevention community. MRA is proud to have worked alongside advocates and partners, including the PASS Coalition, to help expand this access.

Thank you to everyone who supported these efforts. This is a meaningful step forward for melanoma and skin cancer prevention! https://www.fda.gov/news-events/press-announcements/fda-expands-sunscreen-options-first-time-20-years

Today the melanoma community mourns the loss of Professor Richard Scolyer, AO, a pioneering melanoma pathologist, visionary researcher, and dedicated champion for patients.

Dr. Scolyer, one of the world’s foremost melanoma pathologists and global leader in bridging laboratory science with patient care, transformed how melanoma is diagnosed and staged and helped set international standards that assist how clinicians care for patients around the globe.

MRA was honored to support Dr. Scolyer and his team at the Melanoma Institute Australia through a 2020 Team Science Award focused on improving outcomes for patients with high-risk in-transit melanoma. Their work generated important insights into treatment resistance, predictive biomarkers, and personalized treatment strategies.

After his own glioblastoma diagnosis, Dr. Scolyer remained dedicated to advancing science, courageously helping to pioneer new treatment approaches that may benefit future patients.

We extend our deepest condolences to Dr. Scolyer's family, friends, colleagues, and the entire Melanoma Institute Australia community. MRA is proud to have been part of his remarkable journey and will continue to honor his legacy by supporting the bold, collaborative research he championed throughout his career.

Think sun damage only happens at the beach? Think again.

UV exposure occurs every day - even when it's cloudy or cold. Because sun damage is cumulative, small amounts of exposure add up over time. And remember: water, sand, and snow can reflect UV rays, increasing your exposure. Make sun protection part of your daily routine!

Encouraging Update on RP1:

Following discussions with the FDA after the recent denial, study sponsor Replimune plans to resubmit the application for RP1. The FDA has indicated it will prioritize review, recognizing the significant unmet need for patients with advanced melanoma.

For patients and families, this acknowledgment matters. It reflects continued momentum toward expanding treatment options for people with advanced disease.

Thank you to the melanoma community for continuing to share your stories, advocate, and raise awareness around RP1. Your voices remain powerful in helping shape the future of melanoma!

Melanoma does not discriminate - it can impact anyone at any stage of life regardless of their race or ethnicity. That is why it is so important to regularly check your skin and see a dermatologist to evaluate any potential concerns. In addition to Melanoma Awareness Month, May is Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) Month. When it comes to melanoma, AAPI patients are especially underrepresented in research and may be overlooked when it comes to timely care and treatment for this cancer, leading to gaps in treatment and diagnoses. https://www.curemelanoma.org/blog/melanoma-in-the-asian-american-and-pacific-islander-aapi-community
