Malnutrition, especially obesity, threatens national health and security. Nationwide, 77 percent of youth ages 17–24 are ineligible for military service, up from 71 percent in 2017. Obesity alone disqualifies 11 percent and contributes to 44 percent being disqualified for multiple reasons. Among children ages 2 to 19 years old in the United States, over 19 percent are obese. Food insecurity— limited access to healthy food—is a major factor. SNAP helps address this.
