That is how Spike’s K9 Fund founder Jimmy Hatch describes the relationship between a handler and a working K9.

There comes a point after countless hours of training, working, and trusting one another when handler and K9 no longer feel like two separate parts of a team.

A movement, a glance, a shift in energy can be enough.

They learn to read one another in ways that are difficult to explain unless you have experienced it yourself.

And for the handlers who have, that connection does not disappear when the mission ends.

They detect explosives, track threats, protect service members, and use abilities no human can replicate to help teams move through dangerous situations more safely.

Behind that work is an extraordinary partnership. K9 and handler train together, depend on each other, and step into every mission knowing the other may make the difference in getting home.

Their service carries enormous responsibility, and the commitment they give deserves the same in return.

We honor every military working K9 still answering the call, every retired dog who gave years of service beside their handler, and every K9 who made the ultimate sacrifice while serving.

Labor Day highlights a value these dogs show every day: what it truly means to serve and protect. Their work can mean finding someone who is lost, stopping a threat, or helping bring a partner home safely.

There is no paycheck waiting for them at the end of the day. Their reward is simple – time to rest and enjoy the bond they have with their handler.

A leash can look simple. Between a handler and a K9, it represents something much bigger: absolute trust.

The dog moves forward trusting the person beside him. The handler carries the responsibility of earning that trust every single day.

Combat Dog Diesel embodied the courage, loyalty, and relentless drive military working dogs bring to every mission. He served without hesitation and protected his team with everything he had.

At the 2025 Spike’s Soiree, Ret. Master Chief Edward Byers reflected on Diesel, the bond between handler and K9, and the lessons these extraordinary dogs can teach us about trust, service, and sacrifice.

Today, Diesel’s legacy continues through the Combat Dog Diesel Medical Program, helping active and retired working K9s receive critical medical care when they need it most.

The best K9 teams are always working to improve their skills together, especially for situations where teamwork is highly critical.

Our Tactical Area Search Planning & Considerations course gives handlers practical instruction to strengthen K9 integration with SWAT and tactical teams, expanding how their partners can support operators during high-risk missions.

Handlers who want to keep building these capabilities can sign up for the next Spike’s School training.

Meet K9 Mac 🐺 He serves with the Ludlow Police Department and is certified as a patrol and narcotics K9.

K9 Mac has been with his handler since May of this year. His job includes searching vehicles for narcotics and tracking suspects who try to run away. These tasks often put him in situations where his safety is at risk.

Right now, K9 Mac is working without a ballistic vest to protect himself. ‼️

He is on the waitlist for our K9 Krijger Ballistic Vest Program. Your support can help him head into the next shift safely.

Police K9s run toward danger beside handlers who trust them with their lives.

A missing person may depend on their nose. A handler under threat may rely on their courage. In the moments when seconds can mean everything, these dogs do not hesitate and delay.

On National Police K9 Day, we pay respect to each hardworking dog responding to calls, to every retired partner who put in many years of service, and to every hero who made the ultimate sacrifice and never came home.

Their courage should never be forgotten. 🐾❤️
