Yesterday, a wonderful group of students from the College of William & Mary visited the Italian American Museum of Washington DC (IAMDC) along with their history professor, Adrienne Petty. The students are taking a summer course on the People’s History of D.C. through William & Mary’s Washington Center. We were delighted to tell the story of Italian Americans in our nation’s capital as part of their studies.

Thank you to Professor Petty and the William & Mary students for touring the IAMDC, which highlights Italian contributions to Washington, DC, explores the history of Italian immigration to the area, examines the historic role of the century-old Holy Rosary Church, and celebrates the artwork of modern-day Italian and Italian Americans in the area.

The visit also provided an opportunity to reflect on a special connection between William & Mary and Italian American history. One of the College’s earliest faculty members was Carlo Bellini, a native of Florence who became the first Professor of Modern Languages in North America. Bellini taught Italian and French at William & Mary from 1779 to 1803 and was recommended for the position by Thomas Jefferson.

We were honored to welcome this outstanding group and wish them a wonderful summer as they continue to learn about the People's of DC!

Last week The Robert A. Facchina Italian American Museum of Washington DC (IAMDC) was thrilled to welcome Susan Glimcher, Vice President of Artemisia Gold, a global non-profit committed to the rediscovery, restoration, and exhibition of overlooked artwork, with a focus on forgotten female artists.

We had a wonderful tour of the IAMDC, and spent lots of time on the 4th Floor of our museum where we exhibit the artwork of our “Community of Artists”, celebrating the works of local Italian and Italian American artists as they build on traditions of a culture.

On this Memorial Day we pay tribute to all those who gave their lives to defend and protect our cherished democracy, we honor their sacrifices and express our gratitude.

We also honor the more than one million Italian Americans who served during WW II. Their service in our nation’s Armed Forces not only paved the way for a new generation of military leaders of Italian heritage, but more broadly opened the door for Italian Americans to rise to leadership positions and achieve American success stories that were long overdue.

We share with you here several images of local Italian American soldiers during WWII. The photos are on display at our Italian American Museum of Washington DC.

34 years ago today, on May 23, 1992, Judge Giovanni Falcone was diabolically assassinated by the Mafia. Many suffered the same fate before and after him, but Falcone’s death became a historic turning point. It was the moment when the people of Italy and the Italian government stood up and said “enough.”

Thanks to Judge Falcone’s lasting legacy, law enforcement institutions are better equipped and more determined than ever to combat corruption and protect victims. His courage lives on.

We remember him, in Washington DC with a memorial mass at Holy Rosary Church and civic ceremony at the Italian American Museum of Washington DC.

As the late Justice Scalia once said, Judge Falcone “had stepped forward to do what good men had to do. All good causes have their martyrs. Falcone became a martyr to the cause of justice. Glory and honor to his name.”
