Amara Legal Center The Amara Legal Center provides free legal services to survivors of sex trafficking and sex workers.

The Amara Legal Center provides free legal services to individuals whose rights have been violated through commercial sex. Amara recognizes that while there are many different paths that lead a person into commercial sex, many individuals face a common set of legal issues. Amara serves survivors of sex trafficking and any other individual harmed by commercial sex in the Washington, DC metropolitan area. We are committed to raising public awareness of the legal issues facing our clients, to connecting our clients with other vital social services, and to fighting tirelessly to provide excellent legal representation to all of our clients.

One of the most common myths about human trafficking is that survivors are always physically trapped or restrained. It is crucial to understand that traffickers use a spectrum of power and control techniques to keep individuals in situations of exploitation. This includes threats, manipulation, gaslighting, child custody, financial abuse, and more.

Traffickers target groups and individuals with actual or perceived vulnerabilities, including groups that face systemic discrimination, limited access to resources, and fewer economic opportunities. Traffickers exploit and manipulate these vulnerabilities to gain power and control.

Let’s work together to increase access to resources, build a safer community, and support survivors.

Join us for a practical session on requesting vacatur to clear criminal records.

Criminal records often create significant barriers for trafficking survivors seeking employment, housing, and stability. In Washington, DC, survivors of trafficking may seek vacatur relief for criminal records that resulted from their victimization. This session will provide practical guidance for legal professionals on how to effectively support survivors in pursuing vacatur relief in DC.

Exciting news!

Starting October 5, 2026, Amara will become a sub-project of Legal Aid DC.

Amara was founded in 2013 to provide free, specialized legal services for s*x trafficking survivors and s*x workers in the DC-metro area. Over the past thirteen years, we have had the privilege of serving clients in a number of legal matters ranging from family law and civil protection orders to criminal record relief and name changes.

We are excited to bring our legal practice to Legal Aid DC where we will reach more survivors and make an even greater impact on our community. Check out the full announcement: https://ow.ly/Ql0M50ZNCQQ

Human trafficking can happen in any community, including in hotels, motels, and other settings within the hospitality industry. Understanding the signs and patterns of exploitation can help us identify human trafficking situations, support survivors, and challenge misconceptions. Would you be able to recognize the signs?

Trafficking may look like:
- A guest who appears unaware of the current date, time, or location
- Trash cans containing drug or s*xual paraphernalia, or excessive amounts of alcohol in the room
- A portable massage table in the room, along with unusual lighting or cameras
- Someone displaying signs of substance use
- A guest who appears fearful, anxious, depressed, submissive, tense, nervous, resentful, or angry, or who has restricted or scripted communication
- A guest wearing expensive shoes or clothing but carrying few personal possessions, or who does not have possession of their own identification, cell phone, or money
- Unexplained injuries and/or signs of physical abuse
- Someone dressed in clothing that seems inappropriate for their age or the weather
- Signs of branding, such as initials, names, phrases, or symbols

Important: Any one of these signs does not necessarily indicate human trafficking. Look for patterns or multiple indicators, and follow safety protocols when needed.

Traffickers often use a variety of tactics to keep individuals in situations of exploitation. The most common tactics include emotional abuse and manipulation, threats, isolation, violence, economic abuse, and making false promises to gain control. This variety of tactics makes it very difficult for survivors to leave the situation, as they confront trauma, shame, emotional attachment, and/or threats to themselves or their family.

We can all work together to recognize and raise awareness of s*x trafficking and prevent future victimizations.
