At SFI, our Lifetime of Learning education pillar is grounded in a simple idea: help young people understand complex environmental challenges using trees and forests as windows onto the world.

That journey comes to life through Project Learning Tree (PLT) and Project Learning Tree Canada (PLT Canada), which together support learning at every stage — from the classroom to green career pathways. As Nadine, SFI’s SVP of Network Initiatives, shared at the 2026 Annual Conference, “It speaks to our philosophy of a lifetime of learning. We’re never too old to continue learning and helping others.”

For 50 years, PLT has helped build environmental literacy, reaching more than 150 million students and giving young people the foundation to understand their role in a sustainable future. PLT Canada extends that impact beyond the classroom, helping young adults turn that foundation into action by connecting them to meaningful green jobs — with more than 8,700 placements since 2018.

Together, these programs create a clear pathway from early learning to career experience. With mentorship opportunities and new career resources in development, we’re continuing to strengthen that pathway so people can build skills and connections at every stage.

As we head to Montréal for the 2026 SFI Annual Conference next month, one thing is clear: the future of forestry depends on who we bring into the field. Creating space for new voices, fresh perspectives, and meaningful engagement across the sector is how we move forward together to the next ring of growth.🌱

Hear from Ben Cazell, Director of Sustainability at Rayonier about the importance of the SFI Youth Delegate program and investing in our future workforce.

“Picture yourself in the heat of summer, under the beaming sun and sweltering air. You step into the shade of a nearby tree, or pause to rest in an urban green space, immediately feeling relief. Healthy trees and forests create conditions that help people thrive.”

For this year’s International Day of Forests (March 21), we’re celebrating the trees closest to home! Today, nearly 70 percent of the global population lives in urban areas, making community forests essential spaces where the benefits of trees are felt most directly, and where they matter deeply to everyday life.

At SFI, we’re committed to ensuring all forests, including the ones in our communities, are sustainably managed. Through the SFI Urban and Community Forest Sustainability Standard, we’re recognizing the essential role urban forests play in community health, biodiversity, climate resilience, and workforce development.

🌳 Check out our recent article from Meg Hanna, Director of Urban and Community Forestry for Canada: https://forests.org/sustainably-managed-forests-in-our-communities-the-difference-that-we-can-feel/

On May 7th, we invite you to join us for a day dedicated to Advancing Community Priorities with Sustainable Urban Forest Management as part of the 2026 SFI Annual Conference in Montréal, Québec. Together, we will explore how frameworks, tools, and partnerships can strengthen urban forests in the places where people live, work, and play.

What an inspiring few days at this year’s U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) Green Schools Conference in San Diego! 🌿✨

We were proud to support this energizing event, which brought together educators, advocates, and sustainability leaders to explore nature‑based solutions that advance green, healthy learning environments at every level of education.

We had a blast at the Speed Greening event and loved engaging in conversations with attendees about the work SFI and Project Learning Tree are doing to expand access to environmental education opportunities. A special thank you to everyone who stopped by and connected with Annie Perkins, Senior Director, Green Building and Supply Chain at SFI, throughout the conference.

By engaging young people in forest literacy, we can inspire the next generation of forest and sustainability leaders. Together, we’re building healthier, more resilient schools and communities.

Already looking forward to next year!

We’re looking forward to convening PLT State Coordinators, formal and informal educators, and environmental education leaders at the Arbor Day Foundation's Arbor Day Farm in Nebraska for this year’s annual gathering.

As we come together, we are also celebrating a significant milestone – 50 years of impact from Project Learning Tree. For five decades, PLT has equipped educators with high-quality, nature-based instructional resources and built a nationwide network advancing forest literacy and environmental education.

In 2018, SFI integrated PLT to strengthen our shared commitment to sustainability education – connecting students to forests as windows to the world and helping cultivate pathways into the growing green workforce.

🌱 As we look ahead to the next 50 years of developing environmental leaders, we invite our partners and community to join us for 50 Years Forward: https://www.plt.org/donate-to-plt/
