From daily commutes 🚕 to freight delivery 🚚, transport is a major source of air pollution.

To improve air quality, must implement interventions that cut transport-related emissions — while expanding access to high-quality, efficient mobility options 🚃.

That’s why experts from WRI Brasil, WRI Colombia and WRI México teamed up 🤝 to develop an integrated approach to address air quality and e-mobility simultaneously. This consolidated, interdisciplinary network is now driving the development of knowledge projects that respond to the needs of cities, documenting successful experiences and promoting effective public actions across Latin America.

Autocentric development 🛣️ has divided neighborhoods, stripped away local amenities and driven sprawl.

🆕 spatial analyses from the New Urban Mobility Alliance (NUMO) give across 🇺🇸 clear visualizations of the specific barriers and opportunities faced by communities in their day-to-day lives caused by divisive and unsafe infrastructure.

By pairing lived experiences 🤝 with data‑driven insights, cities can better identify where infrastructure divides people from opportunity, where strategic investments can repair past damage, and how they can lay the foundation for urban environments where all residents can thrive.

Shared autorickshaws help ~13M residents in the peripheral areas of Mumbai, 🇮🇳, navigate areas between homes, transit stations and essential urban services 🛺 — yet they remain unrecognized in formal transport planning.

Why? Autorickshaws operate in the gray area.

That’s why Mumbai Living Lab is documenting how autorickshaw networks function and the communities they serve. By studying 🔎 these first- and last-mile connections, the Lab is building the case for greater recognition, integration and support for shared autorickshaws across the .

Want to get involved? This fall, we're co-hosting the 1st Global Convening on Informal & Shared Mobility in Bangkok, 🇹🇭, where we’ll develop a more rigorous, interdisciplinary understanding of informal and shared mobility, with a particular focus on knowledge from and for the Global South. 📲 Stay tuned for more.

From urban parks 🌳 to restored watersheds 💧, cities around the 🌍 are fighting the effects of the climate crisis by turning to a powerful ally: nature itself.

This , we’re looking at how nature-based solutions can serve as a holistic approach to urban development and climate adaptation. While drains or flood barriers address singular problems, offer a way to address multiple challenges simultaneously.

For example, by restoring an urban wetland or developing a green corridor, a city can:
🌊 Absorb flood water
🔥 Curb the urban heat island effect
🦋 Boost native biodiversity
🧑‍🌾 Support residents’ livelihoods
➕ And more

around the 🌏 struggle with the same problem: More people 🟰 more traffic. But what if more people relied on cycling or other modes of active transport?

In celebration of World 🚴 this morning, our Global Urban Mobility Deputy Director and Health & Road Safety Director Claudia Adriazola-Steil joined the Washington Area Bicyclist Association (WABA) and embassy representatives from around the world for a bike ride around Washington, D.C., 🇺🇸.

Her message to the embassies? Active mobility “is a very good model. Let’s try to do it in our countries as well, because it’s super important that we continue making progress on shifting to a more sustainable way of transportation,” 💬 Claudia Adriazola-Steil.

On this , we’re looking 🔙 at the hottest days of the last 5 years.

In the world's largest capital cities, the number of extremely hot days 🌡️ has increased by 25% since the 1990s. Extreme heat threatens public health, disrupts daily routines, slows workers down, damages infrastructure and puts the greatest burden on communities with the fewest resources to adapt.

But are not powerless.

Expanding tree canopy, creating shaded public spaces and investing in heat-resilient urban design can make a real difference. Even simple shade structures 🌳 can help people feel 10–20°F cooler during dangerous heat events.

As cities face hotter futures, action today can help protect lives tomorrow.
