Members of The Salvation Army Women’s Auxiliary (SAWA) of Washington, D.C packed donated backpacks and school supplies for local youth today.

Organized in 1948, The Salvation Army Women’s Auxiliary (SAWA) of Washington, D.C. has been serving the region for over 60 years. SAWA is comprised of Women across the DMV who volunteer their time to serve others who are less fortunate. Over the past several years, this organization has raised funds to support The Turning Point Center for Women and Children by replacing 30-year-old flooring, purchasing bedroom furniture for all 28 units, pay for books and tools for mothers who are returning to school, and supporting their children with tools for school, clothing, diapers along with other events that bring joy to the children.

The Salvation Army serves families and people in crisis living throughout the National Capital Area of DC, Maryland, and Northern Virginia. Whether it is a hot meal, help paying a bill, or a more long-term obstacle, our team is ready to serve anyone in need. We serve all without discrimination. The Salvation Army Women’s Auxiliary is the local volunteer organization of the Salvation Army, an international, nongovernmental relief agency that is usually among the first to arrive with help after natural or man-made disasters. Monies raised at our May 17th luncheon will go toward purchasing backpacks, uniforms, and holiday gifts for families in the metro area, as well as working with the aged, and supporting single mothers and their children living at Turning Point, the Salvation Army’s Transitional Housing for Families. Turning Point presently houses 28 families in safe, furnished apartments while assisting them achieve the skills necessary to become self-sufficient, and offering support services including case management, crisis intervention, individual and family counseling, advocacy, and independent living skills.

Last year funds raised from SAWA events helped over 6,000 disadvantaged children and families in the Greater Washington DC Metro area.
