Mario Andretti — an American icon, pioneer and legend in motorsports. In addition to highlighting his unique story, they will discuss the forthcoming Freedom 250 Grand Prix that will take place on August 22-23, 2026, marking the first‑ever NTT INDYCAR SERIES race on the National Mall in Washington, DC.
Mario Andretti's story is especially compelling because it goes beyond motorsports. His family's experience as refugees, their emigration to the United States, and his rise to become one of the greatest race car drivers in history make him a powerful example of perseverance and opportunity.
We will also focus on his journey from his birthplace in Montona, Italy which was ceded to communist Yugoslavia after WWII (present day Motovun, Croatia) to America. His family lost over 2,100 acres of ancestral land when the communists took over the Istrian peninsula in the northern Adriatic region.
Through his unwavering commitment to faith, hard work, perseverance, risk-taking, and the pursuit of excellence, strengthened by creativity and innovation, Mario became far more than a pioneer and high achiever. His life stands as a powerful testament to courage, ambition, and the enduring promise of the American Dream.
Mario won 111 major professional races!
