Monumental seeks to connect emerging artists, specifically those of the millennial generation, with the larger community by giving them a platform from which to promote their work to the public. As a company, we are committed to fostering new work and providing platforms for emerging writers and local artists. We are a part of a generation that is often written off for their laziness or selfishness. Our generation is scoffed at for going about things the easy way through technology, but our upbringing is multilayered and provides us with a unique world view. We are a group of people who grew up being told we could be anything we wanted to be, while being hit with the biggest recession since the Great Depression just as we were reaching adulthood. We have grown up with amazing technology, and have been able to easily learn about those different from us through that technology. We are open to people in their truest selves making us the most diverse generation in the United States, and those born in 1991- like all three of our founders- represent the largest population in the country. Our point of view reflects that of the largest and a soon to be more powerful generation in our country. We have so much to share, and Monumental believes that art is the vehicle to share every way a millennial sees the world. While our worldview grounds us in our mission, we believe that we are all connected on a basic human level. Regardless of its creator, great art can be relatable across generations. We want to help our peers contribute to that cannon and to be able to interact with it. We strive to give everyone the opportunity that we were given, while helping our audience understand the millennial experience more fully. In addition to contributing to the creation of great works, we want to give our peers opportunities to access great works. We hope to bring millennials to theatre audiences, and to show them how remarkable art can be. Our youth as a company leaves us uniquely positioned to promote a love of fine arts in the next generation; our enthusiasm for the work and writing of our peers lends itself to that goal. Monumental Theatre Company is committed to presenting thought-provoking, emotionally-driven theatrical material; championing new work; and encouraging audiences of all ages to engage with the Millennial generation’s emerging artistic voice. Monumental is defined as “great in importance, extent or size;” it is a tall-order for a young company, but it is a bar we are determined to meet. We hope to continue to grow with and thrive in the greater Washington community by presenting significant works that speak to a wide variety of theatre-goes.
