Did Kimmel go too far in his parody of the White House dinner, which was performed days before the event that ended suddenly when a gunman was subdued by officers?
The annual dinner typically includes a comedic monologue roasting the President and attendees. On Jimmy Kimmel Live, Kimmel performed a mock version of the roast, in part:
“Our first lady, Melania, is here. Look at Melania, so beautiful. Mrs Trump, you have a glow like an expectant widow.” [spoof on the glow of an expectant mother].
“By the way, in the unfortunate event that our president has a medical emergency tonight, do we have a doctor in the house — oh, I’m sorry. I mean, do we have a Jesus in the house? I always confuse them, too.”[spoof of the President posting a meme of himself as Jesus-Christ].
The Trumps are calling for Kimmel’s expulsion, asserting that his monologue was “not comedy” but a “despicable call to violence” and “far beyond the pale.”
But who else is known to make insensitive or inflammatory public remarks about matters of life and death? Just recently, the President himself gloated over the death of former FBI Director Robert Mueller, “Good, I’m glad he’s dead,” wrote the President.
And remember when he seized on opportunity to demean the tragic murder of director Rob Reiner and his wife, suggesting that “Trump derangement syndrome” was the reason for their deaths.
Now back to Kimmel, who actually is an observational comedian and not the President. His job duty is to insult through satirical humor. And when watching this episode prior to the weekend drama unfolding, the skit absolutely was comedy. Kimmel was building upon Trump’s advanced age, like so many republicans did when Biden was president.
In no way was Kimmel inciting violence or suggesting the First Lady could become widowed as the result of an assassination. He clearly showed his intent with the follow up joke of a “medical emergency.”
It was not until after the security breach that the Trump’s turned their attention toward Kimmel’s presentation, in its irony. In fact, it was Caroline Leavitt who predicted, “It will be entertaining. There will be some shots fired tonight in the room.”
