Myth: Old enough to do the crime, old enough to do the time

Busted: Brain immaturity fuels delinquency. Science shows that the brain does not reach full maturity until age 25. This lack of brain maturity makes lawbreaking and other risky behaviors more common during adolescence. The Supreme Court acknowledged this in Roper v. Simmons and Miller v. Alabama, stating that youth under 18 are “less guilty by virtue of their adolescence.”
