Lutheran Volunteer Corps, a community of faith, unites people to work for peace with justice. Our mission is to unite people to work for peace with justice.

We do this by placing Volunteers in full-time positions at social justice organizations for one year. All our volunteers live together in community and practice simple and sustainable living. LVC partners with non-profit organizations in 5 cities where volunteers will live and serve: Baltimore, MD; Wilmington, DE; Washington, DC; Minneapolis, MN; St. Paul, MN. Volunteers live in intentional communities of 4-7 people. Members of Lutheran Volunteer Corps unite their time and talents with the time and talents of society's marginalized people. LVC Volunteers serve in such areas as AIDS/HIV, addiction and recovery, anti-racism, children and youth, community development, education, employment, the environment, food and hunger, LGBTQ rights, health care, housing and homelessness, immigration and refugees, international solidarity, legal assistance, peace, and more. LVC Volunteers receive a stipend which covers housing, food, transportation, health insurance, and personal expenses. A weeklong national & local orientation and ongoing LVC program days are also an integral part of the program. Volunteers are guaranteed two weeks of paid vacation. Volunteers receive support from a full-time Regional Director who assists the volunteer with concerns and questions regarding their placement and community. LVC is on a Journey to an Inclusive Community, forming and strengthening alliances among people of many cultures and communities, and intentionally dismantling racism within LVC, the church, and society. As a Reconciling in Christ organization, LVC welcomes and encourages the participation of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgendered people in all aspects of LVC. LVC volunteers come from a wide variety of faith backgrounds, and do not need to be Lutheran. Married and committed partners are welcome to apply. While there is no upper age limit, volunteers need to be at least 21 to participate. The program begins in mid-August of each year. The application deadlines are January 15 and April 1. As LVC's branches prepare to reach for new and familiar heights, we are entering a season of intentional wintering. 🪾❄️

Ask any gardener, and they will tell you: for your efforts to bear fruit, you must take time to care and strengthen your roots. 🌱

We are clearing the canopy, streamlining our operations, and doing the vital, unseen capacity-building required to host, train, and sustain a lighter, higher-impact network of justice leaders safely and sustainably. 🌄

We plan to take you on a journey through the forest this Autumn. We are grateful to you for taking this journey alongside us. ✨💚

LVC is so very excited to spend a year with Elise, our newest LVC Fellow with Metro D.C. Synod, ELCA! 💚

Elise recently graduated from Penn State University with a B.S. in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology and minors in biology and environmental inquiry. She grew up addressing social justice topics through service. She is excited to grow in her spirituality, and her communication and project development skills this year in her placement with the Metro DC Synod. She aims to later attend graduate school and pursue a career working to conserve our natural world at the intersection of science, policy, and public outreach. She loves crafts and being outdoors, and she is excited to explore DC with her new LVC friends.

Hi, I’m Emily! I just graduated from Drew University with a degree in Biochemistry & Molecular Biology and a minor in Public Health. Originally from Reading, PA, I am so excited to be living in Washington, DC with Lutheran Volunteer Corps!

I am passionate about ensuring everyone has access to quality healthcare, so I am very grateful to be working with Community of Hope. After my service year, I plan to attend medical school. Outside of work, I love playing volleyball, lifting, going on walks, exploring new places, playing board games, and spending time with my friends, family, and cat!

Our Chief Program Officer, Shae Agee, is seeking enthusiastic Community Mentors in the D.C. area for our 2026/2027 Class. 💚 Community Mentors are local members of the LVC support system who invest in the Fellows throughout their Service Year.

This could mean organizing dinners for Bon or Platz House, attending volunteer events with the Fellows, or participating in discussions about current events relevant to their work or interests. ✌️

Most of all, it means serving as a consistent secondary resource to their personal growth and careers! 💫

LVC is proud to introduce another member of the Class of 2026/2027, Rachel! Rachel is a Paralegal in the Detained Adults Program with the Amica Center for Immigrant Rights.

Hey! My name is Rachel, and I am a first-year LVC fellow partnered with Amica Center for Immigrant Rights. I work as a Detained Adults Program Paralegal, and I live in Bon House. I graduated in May 2026 from Duke University with double majors in Public Policy and Spanish, and a minor in Computer Science.

I’m originally from Franklin, TN. I love living in DC— you can find me shopping in Georgetown, walking the free museums with a Diet Coke in hand, exploring the zoo, and hanging out at Bon and Platz House! Some fun facts about me are that I played the oboe for ten years, I love reading fantasy books, and I won my intramural basketball championship last year. I’m so excited to be an LVC Fellow!

Dear Friends of LVC,

I am honored and excited to introduce myself as the new President of Lutheran Volunteer Corps.

For me, this role is deeply personal. As an LVC Volunteer in 1993–94, my year of service was both transformative and formative, shaping a lifelong commitment to social justice, community, and service. Many of my closest friendships and most meaningful relationships began through the shared LVC experience, and the lessons I learned continue to guide me today.

Over the past three decades, my work has taken me through nonprofit, clinical, and academic settings—from direct service and clinical practice to teaching, mentoring, and organizational leadership. Along the way, I’ve carried with me values central to LVC: a commitment to equity and anti-racism, a strong sense of community, and a belief in walking alongside others in service and solidarity.

My experience as an LVC Volunteer laid the foundation for a leadership approach that has grown and deepened over time—shaped by humility, deep listening, and trust in the power of people coming together around a shared purpose.

As I begin this new chapter with LVC, I am excited to learn from and connect with our Fellows, alumni, partners, donors, Board, and staff. Together, we have an opportunity to build on LVC's strong foundation, expand opportunities for service, strengthen our partnerships, and share more broadly the impact of this remarkable community.
One of the enduring gifts of LVC is the way it creates connections that last long after a year of service ends. I am grateful to be returning to this community in a new role, and I look forward to meeting many of you and hearing your stories in the months ahead.

Thank you for welcoming me into this role. I look forward to all we will accomplish together as we continue advancing LVC's mission.
