A strong civil society is a critical part of a strong democracy. At PTF, we support citizens and civil society organizations to hold their governments accountable. That means better schools, better healthcare systems, and strong infrastructure that allows for economic growth for all.

On this International Day of Democracy, PTF stands by its commitment to improving lives through enhanced community participation.

For most students back to school means back to early wake-up times, sports and band practice, homework, and seeing friends again. For children in rural Zambia, back to school now means a better education thanks to the community and government working together.

With the Voice and Accountability project, Civil Society for Poverty Reduction (CSPR) and PTF trained community members on their rights as well as the responsibilities of the government. In addition, CSPR worked with communities to support them to oversee various aspects of education services, including school renovation, administering textbooks, and budget management.

The result was more teachers and students showing up for class, more participation from parents and community members, and better education service delivery for all. Read more about the project here.

In Zambia’s rural communities, accessing quality education can be a struggle. Poor infrastructure, inconsistent teacher attendance, and a lack of dialogue between community members and authorities all contribute to students not getting the education they deserve.

Residents of Bisambu, Rwanda had a stormwater drainage problem. Poor planning of the initial residential site development was to blame, and it was impacting their health, safety and overall well-being. A drainage channel is designed to fix that problem, and it is the result of government and residents working together.

This site visit came after Transparency International Rwanda training on environmental and social safeguarding for infrastructure projects, bringing together District/Sector staff, contractors, and community representatives from Kicukiro and Nyarugenge. TI Rwanda’s Executive Director stressed that Rwanda's development must go hand in hand with strong safeguards and active community participation. Participants deepened their knowledge of environmental and social standards before the field visit that connected legal requirements to on-the-ground realities.

This is all part of the APESA project, funded by the European Union and in partnership with PTF Europe.

If reforms are meant to improve people’s lives, shouldn’t people have a say?

Partnership for Transparency has released a new study that examines civil society engagement across six IMF, World Bank, and Asian Development Bank-supported budget financing operations implemented after Sri Lanka's 2022 economic crisis.

Funded by Open Society Foundations, the study shows that engagement needs to go beyond consultations and to a predictable, transparent engagement process, and one that shows how feedback is incorporated into decisions.
