GFI’s approach brings together key stakeholders to identify practical solutions that can strengthen livelihoods.

In 2005, GFI convened a coalition of multilateral and civil society organizations to generate policy recommendations in the national campaign against illegal logging. Local forest experts then bridged the gap, applying these lessons to the real-world complexities of Indonesia's forest sector.

This approach is a proven model that can be applied to emerging environmental challenges around the world.

How are grassroots organizations leading the path to a greener future?

In India, the Self-Employed Women’s Association (SEWA) is pioneering a Green Skilling initiative under SEWA’s Cleaner Skies Campaign. The initiative trains rural women as solar PV technicians, linking them to better livelihood and income opportunities and supporting the transition to a sustainable, low-carbon future.

GFI is supporting SEWA’s efforts and exploring how the model may be replicated in other regions such as Sub-Saharan Africa, where youth unemployment is a major challenges. By adapting SEWA’s approach, we can scale grassroots solutions and empower young people with the skills needed for a green and resilient economy.

In Nepal, the brick industry employs thousands of unskilled laborers, but it's also one of the country's most hazardous sectors.

Climate change is intensifying these risks. Rising temperatures risk heat stroke and nausea, while increased monsoon rains cause flooding or landslides, damaging homes and infrastructure.

GFI ensures that workers have the resources and systems to respond to the changing pressures of climate change.

In our work in Nepal, we established health and safety councils on each kiln, where workers could monitor changing safety conditions, voice grievances and ensure their remediation.

Join us this June. Your contribution will help expand programs like these, ensuring that every worker can overcome the impacts of climate change.

Rural farmers are on the frontlines of climate change around the world. These changes are destroying livelihoods, as crop yields falter, soil is degraded and pest infestations increase.

In response, GFI partnered with the Ghana Federation of Forest and Farm Producers (GhaFFaP) and the Rural Women Farmers Association of Ghana (RUWFAG) to document the impacts of climate change in Ghana and how women farmers are adapting.

GFI and our partners have shared the findings with key stakeholders, from traditional leaders to the Department of Agriculture. Our local partners are now leveraging this data to advocate for the findings to inform budget allocations.

This is how GFI supports worker-led organizations to lead climate resilience in their own communities.

This week, GFI is launching Resilience Week, a campaign to raise $25,000 to advance our work on climate resilience in the informal economy.

The reality for informal workers is stark:
• Street vendors work under the hot sun without shade, losing income with goods spoiling in the heat and fewer customers
• Farmers face unpredictable rainfall that lowers crop yields, and typhoons and floods that destroy land
• Seasonal and migrant workers may live in temporary homes without proper insulation, where indoor temperatures can become dangerous during heat waves

GFI partners with grassroots organizations to build the skills, resources and systems to advance worker-led climate resilience.

Women business-owners in Uganda face an uphill battle when it comes to expanding or formalizing their businesses. Our recent study of nearly 1,000 informal business owners investigates what’s holding entrepreneurs back and what can be done to support them.

Our partners in this initiative, Ceewa Uganda and the Uganda Hotels, Food, Tourism, Supermarkets, and Allied Workers’ Union (HTS-Union), are now sharing the findings across Kampala and raising awareness of the challenges women entrepreneurs face.
