At this week’s JF Salon, historian Andrew Seth Meyer Andrew Meyer guided us through the Warring States period, one of the most transformative eras in Chinese history. Drawing on his book , Meyer explored how the intellectual and political revolutions of this period, and enduring forms of statecraft, shaped China for more than two millennia. The discussion also invited us to reconsider how ideas born in ancient China continue to influence political thought and governance in East Asia and beyond.

Andrew Meyer’s To Rule All Under Heaven has been one of JF Books’ recent bestsellers. If you missed the event or would like to explore the subject further, copies are available through our online bookstore: JFBooks.org

Measuring Soft Power in International Relations
Speaker: Irene Wu
Date: June 16, 6:00-7:30 PM, Tuesday
RSVP: see bio link
Inspired by how the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) measures the size of an economy, the Soft Power Rubric (SPR) measures the volume and intensity of people-to-people relationships among countries.  International communications, travel, education, and migration, are all important channels that influence how people in one country view people in others. Special for the JF Books salon is a discussion of China, Taiwan, and related countries.

Irene S. Wu, Ph.D. is a political scientist and economist who teaches in the Communications, Culture, and Technology Program at Georgetown University. Measuring soft power in international relations is a product of her fellowship at the Wilson Center for International Scholars. Her other books include Forging trust communities: how technology changes politics and From iron fist to invisible hand: the uneven path of telecommunications reform in China.

The book recounts the Warring States Period (481–221 BCE), a transformative era concurrent with the Persian Wars and Alexander’s conquests in the Mediterranean. This crucible gave birth to Confucianism, Daoism, and Sun Tzu’s The Art of War. Meyer will explain that this period marked one of world history’s most profound revolutions, forging an imperial Chinese state that endured until 1911 and creating institutional forms of governance that continue to structure the politics of our modern world.

About the Speaker:
Andrew Seth Meyer is Professor of History at Brooklyn College. He earned his BA in East Asian Studies from Brown University in 1989 and his PhD in East Asian Languages and Civilization from Harvard in 1999. He lived, studied and taught in different parts of China and Japan for five years. His research and writing focus on the intellectual history of early China.

In June, JF Books presents a new series of conversations on early Chinese intellectual history, soft power in international relations, literary memory of the Cultural Revolution, and the preservation of Hong Kong archives. Spanning classical China, contemporary global affairs, Chinese-language literature, and Hong Kong studies, this month’s programs invite scholars, writers, and researchers to reflect on how history shapes institutions, how memory enters literature and archives, and how knowledge is preserved and transmitted in a changing world.

Peter Hessler’s Other Rivers — available in Chinese

More than twenty years ago, Peter Hessler captured a rapidly changing China in River Town—a country still filled with movement, ambition, and belief in the future. Two decades later, he returns to teach in Sichuan once again. In Other Rivers, he writes about a very different China.

The students he once taught largely came from rural families and believed hard work could change their lives. Today’s young people are more educated, more connected, and often more aware of the limits around them. They are thoughtful and perceptive—but far less likely to imagine that the future can be transformed.

From the reform generation to the generation shaped by Xi Jinping, Other Rivers is not only about two generations of Chinese youth. It is also a powerful portrait of a country full of contradictions: society and the economy have changed dramatically, while politics feels frozen in place—or quietly moving backward.

“Everything has changed, and yet nothing has changed.”

To read Other Rivers today is to read not only about China, but also about a larger question of our time: how individuals and generations make sense of themselves while living through profound change and growing constraints.

On the eve of the 37th anniversary of / Tiananmen Massacre in 1989, JF Books is specially hosting a screening of the documentary *Tiananmen Tonight* followed by a post-screening discussion, inviting director Michael Streissguth to attend in person and revisit with readers that night in 1989 that changed China and profoundly influenced the history of world journalism.

*Tiananmen Tonight* brings the lens back to the news scene—focusing on how Dan Rather and the CBS News team, under extreme uncertainty and high pressure, persisted in delivering everything unfolding on Beijing‘s streets to the world. The film allows us to see anew: At turning points in history, journalists are not just witnesses but bearers of risk; news reporting is not only about transmitting information but also about how public memory is preserved and carried forward.

In the post-screening exchange, on-site audience members also engaged in in-depth discussions around journalistic ethics, media responsibility, and why, more than thirty years later, we still need to continually look back at June Fourth. The sounds that lingered on Beijing’s streets that night also reached Washington once more through the footage. Thanks to the director and every friend who attended, at this time of commemoration, for bearing witness to history with us and reflecting together: In today‘s world, what do truth and courage truly mean?

Understanding China-North Korean Relations: A Historical perspective
Speaker: Gregg Brazinsky
Date: May 28, Thursday, 6:00–7:30 PM|In English
RSVP: see bio link

Cold War Comrades demonstrates how Sino-North Korean friendship ultimately helped both states to survive a very tenuous period in their histories. Professor Gregg Brazinsky will explore Sino-North Korean relations during the early Cold War. He will show the surprising role that emotions played in this relationship. The Korean War and the Sino-North Korean alliance helped to foster stronger emotional attachment to the state and strengthen belief in socialist internationalism in both countries.

About the Speaker:
Gregg A. Brazinsky is Professor of History and International Affairs and director of the Asian Studies Program at The George Washington University. He is the author of Nation Building in South Korea: Koreans, Americans, and the Making of a Democracy and Winning the Third World: Sino-American Rivalry during the Cold War.
