十一月的季風人文講壇，從個人的情感與記憶出發，走進歷史的暗角與時代的裂痕：旅居北京的美國作家 Tammy Treichel 以跨文化愛情小說《Pretzels and Pythons》講述在北京重新開始的人生；海洋史學家 Steven Schwankert 以《The Six》追尋鐵達尼號上六位被歷史遺忘的華人倖存者；資深記者、作家戴晴將以中文回望「我的1989，鄧小平的1989，和中國的1989」；旅居英德的詩人楊煉與小說家、畫家友友對談「世界意義的中文寫作」；小說家姚鄂梅以中篇小說集《家庭生活》（The Unfilial）探問「家，為什麼會傷人」。月中，《鴻》作者張戎將帶來睽違三十餘年的續作《飛吧，鴻！：母親、我與中國》，於11月17日、18日分別以英文和中文與讀者對談。

This November, JF Salon moves from personal stories of love and memory into the hidden corners of history. Beijing-based American author Tammy Treichel shares her cross-cultural romance novel Pretzels and Pythons. Maritime historian Steven Schwankert recovers the forgotten story of the six Chinese survivors of the Titanic in The Six. Veteran journalist and writer Dai Qing speaks in Chinese on “My 1989, Deng Xiaoping’s 1989, and China’s 1989.” Poet Yang Lian and novelist-painter Youyou, who live between the UK and Germany, discuss what it means for Chinese-language writing to matter to the world. Novelist Yao Emei asks why home can hurt through her novella collection The Unfilial. Mid-month, Wild Swans author Jung Chang presents her long-awaited sequel, Fly, Wild Swans: My Mother, Myself and China, in English on November 17 and in Chinese on November 18.

Thanks to everyone who joined us for an evening with Fuchsia Dunlop 扶霞! Fuchsia Dunlop 扶霞
We came to hear about her new cookbook, Five Tastes, and left hungry, with a much longer grocery list. Fuchsia took us from her chef training in Chengdu in the ’90s through three decades of eating her way across China, and walked us through the five tastes of Chinese cooking: sour, bitter, sweet, pungent and salty.
Some of it is ancient philosophy, and a lot of it comes down to what’s in your pantry. The good news is that the recipes are easy enough for a Tuesday night. Thank you, Fuchsia, for the stories and the inspiration, and thank you to everyone who came out. See you at the next one, and maybe eat first.

沈棟（Desmond Shum），企業家、投資人。其回憶錄《紅色賭盤》深入剖析了當代中國財富、權力與政治的交織。他曾於中國主導大型房地產與私募股權投資項目，深諳政商關係與高層政治運作。

In this Chinese-language talk, Desmond Shum, author of Red Roulette, draws on his years at the heart of China’s business–political nexus to examine how power shapes wealth and the fate of entrepreneurs. As state power continues to expand and China’s private economy faces unprecedented difficulties, can entrepreneurs still truly own their companies and their wealth? How did a once-vibrant private sector arrive where it is today? Starting from Red Roulette, Shum will explore state–business relations in the Xi Jinping era and the future of China’s economy and its entrepreneurs.

About the Speaker
Desmond Shum is an entrepreneur, investor, and author with a unique vantage point at the intersection of global business and Chinese elite politics. Having built and managed large-scale ventures in real estate and private equity across China, he combines firsthand experience of the country’s economic rise with deep insight into the workings of its political system. Drawing on decades inside China’s business–political nexus, he provides rare perspective for policymakers, investors, and institutions seeking to understand how China’s political economy shapes global markets. Beyond business, he is engaged in philanthropic initiatives focused on education and cross-cultural understanding. He is the author of Red Roulette, a widely acclaimed memoir offering an insider’s account of wealth, power, and politics in contemporary China.

Thank you to everyone who came out to JF Books last night for Emily Feng | Journalist ’s talk on Our Hearts Burned for Home.
It’s a story most people have never heard. Beijing’s surveillance and cultural erasure in Xinjiang pushed thousands of Uyghurs into exile, and some of them ended up on the front lines of Syria’s civil war, where they helped bring down Assad. Emily built the book on rare interviews with the fighters and their families. It’s not an easy read, but it’s an important one.
