This September marks JF Books’ second anniversary in Washington, DC! To celebrate, we are proud to present the 2026 Sinophone Independent Film Festival: Between Islands, Voices Emerge (Sept 19–26). The festival features ten remarkable documentaries and narrative films spanning Taiwan, Hong Kong, mainland China, Costa Rica, and the global diaspora.
Alongside the festival, our September event series explores the deep layers of Chinese history, geopolitical influence, and cultural identity. Join publisher Bao Pu as he re-examines the lasting impact of the Cultural Revolution, veteran journalist Orville Schell as he exposes China’s secret prison labor system, and Dr. Audrye Wong as she demystifies Beijing’s economic statecraft. We also delve into diaspora, food, and belonging with authors Kit Fan and Jeremy Tiang, and wrap up with an analysis of the Trump-Xi summit featuring fellows from the Penn Project.
Even in this unstable world, we look forward to connecting with you through films and conversations.
