On September 12th, we hosted the 6th Annual Youth Voices Showcase. It was an amazing time seeing our young leaders of tomorrow sharing their art and stories with some of our community leaders the present. Generations of DC Statehood activism and awareness was at work, and it was a beauty to see.

We’re excited to be part of the second annual DC Community Organizing Festival on September 26!

For one afternoon, Rising Organizers is bringing together DC’s grassroots ecosystem for a day of community, organizing, and collective action. 

Come find our table, meet other organizations doing work you care about, and get connected to the people building power across the District. There will be practical organizing workshops led by experienced organizers, free delicious food, and plenty of festive activities to spend the day in community.

Last week, our members and leadership showed up and showed out for the . DC Statehood is paramount to establish rights for more than 700,000 residents in the District. Our presence at the march showcases our dedication to statehood and steadfast hope for equality.

Join the  LWVDC and the 1882 Foundation as we celebrate Women’s Equality Day to commemorate the 1920 adoption of the 19th Amendment that gave women the right to vote. 

The event will take place on August 26, 2026 at the Mabel Pin Hua Lee mural in Chinatown at 618 H Street NW at the intersection of H and 7th Street NW.  The event will start at 6:00 pm and end at 7:30pm. This is an outdoor event and we ask that everyone wear white attire.

Today marks one year since the National Guard arrived in despite the objections of residents and local leaders. Hear directly from DC residents on how they feel and how this has impacted them. The more than 700,000 people who call DC home deserve the same rights of self-governance and full voting representation that all Americans living in the 50 states have.

Several of our members recently had the honor of thanking Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton for her many years of leadership and service to the city, by presenting her with the Linda Beebe Award for Making Democracy Work. Congresswoman Norton has always had a steadfast commitment to advocating for full rights for the people of Washington, DC and working meticulously to strengthen our liberty to govern ourselves. Thank you, Eleanor Holmes Norton , for your many contributions to our city!

Last week, Rep. James Comer (R-KY) introduced the “D.C. Taxing Authority Review Act” (H.R. 9720). This week, the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee marked up the bill and passed it on a party line vote. LWVDC members were in the room to show their opposition to the bill. This bill is the worst attack on Home Rule since the Home Rule Act was passed in 1973. Our elected officials could not change any tax, fee, permit, or business license without members of Congress - who are not elected by us - approving it first.
