Empower DC ORGANIZING COMMUNITY POWER!

The DC Council is finalizing the programs that city will fund in next year's budget. There is currently a $600 million cut to safety net programs including housing, healthcare, and childcare. We need the DC Council to raise revenue by taxing wealthy residents & businesses fairly. Let your Councilmember know! (Link in story / or use the mold action in our bio)

There is currently no funding in next year’s budget for mold inspections! And, there’s limited funds for repairing healthy and safety violations when a landlord refuses through the Nuisance Abatement Fund. DC Council is finalizing the budget now! Email the Council TODAY to tell them to fund mold inspections and health/ safety repairs. (Link in Bio)

DC must raise revenue to find critical, lifesaving programs (like Emergency Rental Assistance, vouchers, and mold inspections) in next year's budget. A 3% tax on wealthy residents' passive income (like assets & capital gains) will go a long way towards meeting this gap!

While many Councilmembers are telling DC residents to make hard choices, this is the choice that needs to be made. The needs of most DC residents over the increasing wealth of a few. DC can - and must- do this.

Thank you to for leading!

Empower DC members testified at the DOB budget hearing to express their concerns about the absence of a process for mold inspections and the need to fully fund DOB’s inspections and enforcement process to better hold land lords accountable! Take Action now and tell the city council to fully fund mold inspections at the Department of Buildings! (LINK TO EMAIL PETITION IN BIO)

Your Councilmembers need to hear from you today. FIll out the Access to Justice Email Action - Link in Bio

D.C. Council is deciding on what programs & services DC will fund in next year's budget and the Access to Justice Initiative is facing a crisis. The Mayor's budget cuts funding from by 86% – from $31.7 million to just $4.487 million. We are calling on the Council to restore funding to ensure that residents facing eviction, domestic violence, the loss of public benefits, and other urgent legal challenges can access legal services.

This funding supports our community’s most vulnerable residents. It allows Empower DC to provide direct outreach and education to residents at risk of eviction or displacement.

Yesterday we joined in a ribbon cutting of the new Bench Monitors. These sensors are able to collect air quality data, like fine particulate matter, ozone and Black Carbon. This project was an outcome of DOEE’s Air Quality Advisory Board that Empower DC helped coordinate and convene in 2024-2025.

You can find these park bench monitors at the Petworth Recreation Center (Ward 4), Deanwood Recreation Center (Ward 7), Crummell School (Ward 5), the Barry Farm Recreation Center (Ward 8) and at the Zoo (Ward 3).

DC Council: Fund Access to Justice & Protect Tenants!

The Access to Justice Initiative is the DC's largest public investment in legal services for low- and moderate-income residents. It's facing an 86% cut! This puts tens of thousands of D.C. residents at risk of getting no legal help. Please join us in urging the D.C. Council to make the restoration of Access to Justice Initiative funding a top FY27 budget priority.
