Tregaron Conservancy Tregaron Conservancy is a historic woodland garden that is open every day, free of charge. Enter at 3100 Macomb St NW or Klingle Rd NW east of Woodley Rd.

From Private Estate to Public Treasure:
In 1912, renowned architect Charles Adams Platt designed the estate for a couple from Cleveland, James and Mary Alice Parmalee, who wanted to live with a view of the National Cathedral as it was then under construction. The estate was originally named "The Causeway," inspired by the dramatic sweep of its stone entrance drive. The landscape was designed by a leading landscape designer of the early 20th century, Ellen Biddle Shipman. The estate is one of the last of Shipman's prized, and now historic, gardens. In 1940, Ambassador Joseph Davies and his wife, heiress Marjorie Merriweather Post, purchased the estate and renamed it "Tregaron," after an idyllic town in Wales. It was the site of many prominent social and philanthopic events. Tregaron is on the National Register of Historic Places, is a DC Landmark, and is in the Cleveland Park Historic District. A 2006 settlement ended 40 years of attempts to turn the landscape into a housing development. The land was placed into a conservancy in perpetuity, for the public's permanent enjoyment. Visit Tregaron, enjoy its beauty and its history. Join with us as stewards in preserving its living legacy as a historic urban woodland.

There’s an app for that! Debuting at this year’s Tregaron Unplugged event (Oct. 17) is a new soundwalk experience, “Shimmers in the Field,” by Chromic Duo, inspired by the serenity of Tregaron Conservancy. A GPS-enabled, immersive work, “Shimmers in the Field” blends storytelling with the sounds of toy piano to encourage contemplation about connection, wonder, and legacy. Bring a friend and join us (free with registration): https://www.washingtonperformingarts.org/event/tregaron-unplugged-26/

The soundwalk is co-commissioned in honor of the 60th anniversary of Washington Performing Arts and 20th anniversary of Tregaron Conservancy. Additional details on how to download and experience it on site at Tregaron will be announced in October 2026.

Celebrating 20 + 60 This year’s Tregaron Unplugged is part of a milestone year for both organizations. Tregaron Conservancy is celebrating 20 years, and Washington Performing Arts is celebrating 60 years. Together, we are marking these anniversaries by creating something that reflects our shared b...

Tregaron Conservancy and Washington Performing Arts are thrilled to announce the world premiere of “Shimmers in the Field,” a new soundwalk created by Chromic (Lucy Yao and Dorothy Chan .dorothy) for Tregaron Conservancy. We partnered in co-commissioning this soundwalk -- which will be available to our visitors for a full year -- in honor of the 20th anniversary of the Conservancy and 60th anniversary of Washington Performing Arts.

Blending original music, narration, storytelling, and sound design, "Shimmers in the Field" transforms a visit to Tregaron into a guided act of listening. Using GPS technology, the free mobile app locates each listener within the park and layers music and stories keyed to areas along the trails. The walk follows no fixed route: visitors chart their own paths, linger where they choose, and encounter the work differently on every visit and in every season.

Experience the soundwalk starting on October 17 at Tregaron.

We’re working hard to protect our magnificent American beech trees from the threat of beech leaf disease. This fatal disease, caused by a microscopic roundworm, is now sweeping through DC. Our arborists The Davey Tree Expert Company and forester Allan Rey are on it!
Thank you to our incredible supporters for helping us meet this challenge. To learn more, visit our Trees of Tregaron webpage at tregaron.org.

Tommy Ceil on bass, offering rich instrumentation and dynamic
improvisation. Vocalist Kendall follows, joined by special guest Charles White on keyboard, with a smooth and expressive blend of jazz and R&B.

Guests should enter via the pedestrian walkway at 3100 Macomb Street NW and proceed up the driveway to the event location. Street parking is available; there is no parking on site.
