This past Labor Day, workers gathered in Nashville to honor the life and legacy of Vonda McDaniel. Vonda was a WILL Empower mentor and champion for working people.

Vonda's father "Uncle Bill" joined WILL Empower community members, including WE co-director Sheri Davis (Rutgers Professor and director of CIWO), former apprentice Sweetrica Baker (Memphis CLC), mentor Naomi Williams (Rutgers Professor), and emerging leader Dana Smith (Nashville CLC), joined the Labor Day Parade to celebrate Vonda’s life and the lasting impact she had on the labor movement.

This Labor Day, the Nashville CLC is honoring Vonda McDaniel. Vonda was a powerful advocate for working people and women in labor - including through WILL Empower. This year, show up and show out in honor Vonda's years of work and mentorship in the movement.

From the Nashville CLC

"The annual Labor Day Parade was one of Vonda's favorite days of the year. She poured herself into making it an event that was inviting to all and a reflection of the tireless work members put in every day. Her tenacity was apparent in the way members always showed up (including last year in the pouring rain). Her mentorship was evident in the way she empowered affiliates to lead the planning. Her passion was clear in the way she always wanted to make it bigger and better. The Labor Day Parade was a labor of love and love of labor for Vonda. "

WILL Empower Apprentices like Lizzy Prichard are making change across the country.

Lizzy applied to be an apprentice with WILL Empower to get more involved in the labor movement. She was placed with OPEIU local 792, where she has since transitioned into a full-time organizer role. Prichard organized the first coffee shops for OPEIU by using her experience at Starbucks to help unionize 7 Rising Star Coffee Roasters locations across Cleveland, Ohio.
