Tomorrow is the last day to make your voice heard!

HUD is proposing changes that could make it harder to identify and address discriminatory effects in how federal resources are distributed.

Federal funding can shape whether communities recover after a disaster, whether residents can access public services, and whether people can get help in a language they understand. Those resources should be available fairly, regardless of race, color, or national origin.

Title VI of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 helps protect that principle by ensuring that federal dollars are not used to discriminate. Under the Biden administration, HUD used Title VI to require jurisdictions receiving disaster funds to examine whether their planned spending could leave communities behind.

These protections also matter beyond disaster recovery, including for public housing and federally funded programs administered by state and local governments, as well as access to federally funded services for people with limited English proficiency.

Public comments are due by 11:59 p.m. tomorrow, October 9. NFHA and our partners at The Legal Defense Fund are urging people to join us in condemning these actions by submitting a public comment against the proposal:

Private listings can limit who has access to homes while also reducing the amount of housing market information available to the public. That matters because sales and listing data help establish what homes are worth.

When fewer sales and listing details are publicly available, appraisers have less information to use when determining a home’s value. That can make it harder for homeowners and homebuyers to understand or challenge an appraisal. Transparency in housing data is an important fair housing issue.

NFHA joined LULAC, NAHREP The National Association of Hispanic Real Estate Professionals, National Association of Real Estate Brokers and UnidosUS in a new HousingWire op-ed calling for greater transparency and access to housing market information.

As private listings become more common, the need for reliable, publicly available appraisal data becomes even more urgent. Read the full op-ed:

Twenty-one U.S. Senators are standing with NFHA and local fair housing organizations in our fight to protect the resources needed to enforce fair housing across the country.

Led by Senator Van Hollen and Senator Cory Booker, the senators filed a brief arguing that HUD unlawfully restricted funding for local fair housing organizations.

These organizations are on the front lines of protecting people from housing discrimination. They investigate complaints, conduct testing, educate communities, and help people understand and enforce their fair housing rights. Changing how this funding is distributed could put critical resources at risk and make it harder for people to access the local organizations they rely on when they face housing discrimination.

As we continue working to protect these resources, NFHA and our member organizations are grateful to these senators for standing up for fair housing and the organizations doing this work every day.

When disaster strikes, federal recovery dollars should help communities rebuild based on need, not race or national origin.

After Hurricane Harvey in 2017, HUD found that Texas had directed disaster recovery funds away from Black and Latino neighborhoods in Houston, even as those communities faced significant damage. Title VI of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 provides an important safeguard against this kind of discrimination in federally funded programs. These protections also help ensure that federal dollars reach communities fairly across programs administered by states, local governments, and public housing authorities, including access to federally funded services for people who speak languages other than English.

HUD is now proposing to roll back these protections, potentially making it harder to identify and address situations where federally funded programs leave communities behind based on race, color, or national origin.

What can the history of the Interstate Highway System teach us about the rapid buildout of AI data centers?

A new publication from The Leadership Conference on Civil and Human Rights' Center for Civil Rights and Technology, Our Tech, Our Future: How to Build a Tech Industry Accountable to We the People, examines that question through contributions from technology and civil rights leaders, including NFHA Chief AI Officer & Head of the Responsible AI Lab Michael Akinwumi.

In his essay, From the Interstate Highway Era to AI Data Centers: Safeguarding Housing and Health in Infrastructure Placement, Akinwumi looks at the lasting effects highway construction had on Black communities and the lessons that history offers for decisions about where AI infrastructure is built.

He calls for community impact assessments and enforceable community benefit agreements that account for both the resources data centers consume and the impacts they can have on housing, health, and surrounding communities.
