Since 1975, the National Association for Bilingual Education (NABE) has been a non-profit membership organization that works to advocate for educational equity and excellence for bilingual/multilingual students in a global society. NABE’s priorities include: Improving instructional practices for linguistically and culturally diverse children; providing bilingual educators with more high-quality p

🌎✨ A vision for the future of bilingual education is coming to life in Puerto Rico.
NABE had the privilege of visiting Escuela Bilingüe Rafael Hernández Marín, where we saw firsthand the incredible impact of a school built on the belief that bilingualism is a strength.

Joined by Jeannine Ortiz, Director of Bilingual Programming for the Puerto Rico Department of Education, and Principal William Ortiz, we learned how this innovative school continues to grow. What began with Kindergarten and 1st grade has now expanded to include 2nd and 3rd grades, with 4th and 5th grades launching next school year.

Throughout the school, English and Spanish are embraced side by side, creating an environment where students develop language proficiency while building confidence, cultural pride, and the skills needed to connect with the world.

As Jeannine Ortiz shares, this school is more than a bilingual program—it's a gateway to global opportunities, giving students the very first stepping stone toward becoming multilingual global citizens.

NABE is honored to celebrate and support schools like Rafael Hernández Marín that are paving the way for the future of multilingual education.
