SW Community Gardens A public and private community garden geared towards food, friendships, flowers, and social justice.

The SW Community Garden opened on July 31st, 2013 with the help of Fiskars, The Home Depot, and DC Department of Parks and Recreation. The garden is the culmination of a year long effort by a group of green-thumbed SW residents that found a common interest, and worked to bring it to fruition. The garden initially consisted of 34 raised beds: 2 that are wheelchair accessible, 4 that are specifically reserved for residents of the 4 surrounding public housing complexes, and 10 that are worked communally. In 2014, the garden won a DC Love Your Block grant and added 3 additional plots in October 2014, bringing the total number of plots to 37. The communal section grows food for not only its volunteers but for the neighborhood as well. Anyone is welcome to help out in this section during our open work days. The goal of the garden is to create a space where residents can interact with one another and nature, while also serving as an educational tool that provides local, fresh food to the neighborhood.

An unfortunate shooting occurred in Lansburgh Park tonight during garden hours. Thankfully, no one in the garden was hurt. This is the first time I’ve ever heard about/witnessed a shooting in Lansburgh Park in my 16 years of living here (and couldn’t find any mention of one after a brief online search). My heart breaks for all the people who were in the park this evening; volunteers, parents and kids, friends, neighbors. We understand this may have been scary/traumatizing/upsetting for anyone who was there. Gun violence is unacceptable. We’ll reach out to Charles Allen to see if we can learn more about what happened, receive updates on the police investigation, and learn more about efforts to interrupt gun violence in the neighborhood. If anyone has resources or thoughts they would like to share, please reach out. Our garden is a bright spot in our neighborhood and we want it to continue to be a safe space that helps build the kind of world we all want to live in.
