In Kearneysville, West Virginia, American workers are building tools that help clear deadly remnants of war thousands of miles away.

Through partnerships with the UN Mine Action Service (UNMAS), the U.S. State Department, and The HALO Trust, Schonstedt’s American-made detectors help humanitarian deminers safely clear land in places like Ukraine, Lebanon, and Sudan. To date, more than 700 of these detectors have made their way to 30 countries.

Old satellite images are helping create safer ground in 🇰🇭.

Declassified U.S. military imagery is giving HALO a new way to uncover roads and tracks that disappeared beneath farmland decades ago, helping identify where landmines may still be hidden.

Since the project began, HALO has identified more than 100 sites for future clearance. In Dei S’et, U.S.-funded operations have safely destroyed three anti-vehicle mines from active farmland, helping protect families and their livelihoods.

Technology, partnership, and demining are advancing safety, stability, and economic opportunity.

A historic step towards a safer . 🇸🇧

HALO has officially launched its first clearance pilot in Solomon Islands, where communities have lived with the threat of unexploded bombs for decades.

Work will begin at Terere Christian School and Helena Goldie Nursing College in Western Province which will mean families can work, learn and play safely.

HALO's first team of locally recruited specialists recently completed training alongside colleagues from the National UXO Office, Royal Solomon Islands Police Force and other partners – a powerful example of cross-sector collaboration.

As clearance expands to other provinces following this pilot, more land will be returned safely to the people who depend on it.

John Alexander Gallego never imagined he would return home to clear the very land his family had been warned to avoid.

When he was 16, an armed group told his father that anti-personnel mines had been laid near their farm in eastern 🇨🇴 . For years, fear shaped daily life and kept land that should have sustained the family out of reach.

At 18, John Alexander joined HALO as a deminer. Just one year later, he returned to his community wearing a HALO uniform to help clear his family's land and protect the people he grew up alongside.

More than a decade later, John is training the next generation of deminers, sharing his own journey to inspire others and helping communities build safer futures.

His story is a reminder that humanitarian landmine clearance is about more than removing explosives. It's about restoring livelihoods, creating opportunity, and giving families the confidence to return home.

For children in 🇿🇼, the journey to school once meant passing dangerously close to minefields.

HALO teams painstakingly cleared land in Ward 20 to help restore safe access to Kasika Primary School, giving children the freedom to walk to school safely and focus on learning.

Together with Happy Readers, HALO also helped develop "The Minefield," an English-language learning book that helps children build confidence and comprehension while learning how to stay safe around .

Following the devastating 7.4 magnitude earthquake that hit 🇨🇴 last month, HALO teams mobilized to meet the urgent needs of affected communities.

Operations were especially difficult in remote, hard-to-reach areas, where critical infrastructure was damaged or destroyed.

Thanks to generous support from Starlink, HALO staff were able to install several kits to support HALO’s relief efforts and for the communities lacking internet connectivity.

"What was once a source of fear is becoming a source of optimism."

For teachers and students at Buna Elementary and Primary School, that change can't come soon enough.

Just steps from where children learn and play, a 100-pound bomb and two artillery projectiles were discovered during construction work. More than eight decades after the Battle of Buna-Gona in 🇵🇬, the dangers left behind by World War II are still affecting everyday life in this community.

HALO teams are working with local residents to identify explosive hazards, educate students on how to stay safe, and prepare for the safe destruction of the items threatening the school.
