In a scam, someone may send money because a criminal has convinced them the request is real. That is different from traditional fraud, where a criminal makes a transaction without the consumer’s authorization.

Georgia Attorney General Chris Carr explains in Fortune why that distinction matters. By the time a payment is made, the deception may have been underway for days or weeks. Preventing losses means helping people recognize scams earlier, sharing information about emerging threats, and giving law enforcement the resources to pursue the criminals behind them.
